Brand new to this site and boy am I glad to find it. I have a 5 year old female that last Thursday had a spay for cystic ovaries. During surgery they found she had cystitis and they gave us an RX for Baytril. On Friday afternoon she had diarrhea and I stopped the antibiotic. Of course I was unable to find a vet until the following Monday, so her cystitis went untreated another two days. Yesterday she started injections of Baytril, I am super concerned about her lack of appetite. I have been feeding her critical care, but my normally voracious eater now show interest in food but just does not want to eat. I am also giving her a pea sized amount of Bene-Bac thinking that will help her out as well. Anyone have any experience with Baytril injections and appetite? I really had hoped that by giving her the injections she would feel better. She is also getting Metacam for pain once a day. I know she has a whole lot going on, just very antsy about her lack of wanting to eat.

Hi

Baytril injections should not impact on the appetite but oral baytril (especially in combination with potential post-op loss of appetite as a reaction to the GA drugs) can knock out the gut microbiome in sensitive piggies and it can take a while for it to recover.

Please follow the tips in these two practical guides. Unfortunately, all you can do is hang on in there with feeding support for the time being:

If you have a healthy companion, you can also try 'poo soup' (i.e. live guinea pig gut microbiome transfer) in addition to the bene bac). You can find how to make it (it is not quite as gross as it sounds) in this link here: Probiotics, Recovery Foods And Vitamin C: Overview With Product Links

Wishing your girl a good recovery from her spaying operation. I've had several 5 year olds spayed for the same reason if they either grew too large or would have turned cancerous in older age (the last lady has just celebrated her 8th birthday).

Thank you! That is good news to hear you have an older pig that did well after spaying. I feel like the Cystitis might be causing an even bigger issue than the spay itself. We will keep pushing on, its just so worrisome when they don't eat. We will keep pushing critical care. I did notice today she's eating more hay, so maybe we are creeping in the right direction.

Peeing blood is not unusual after an operation, so it will hopefully be just that.

If it is really a cystitis - bacterial or sterile (i.e. non-bacterial and not responding to antibiotics) -, we can help you with practical care and support tips if needed.

But I would recommend that you concentrate for now on getting her through the rough spot, first and foremost. The very detailed and very practical links in my first post will hopefully help you care for her to the best of your ability.

All of my five older spayed sows have lived for at least another year after their spay to reach or surpass the average life span and they have all died from unrelated problems; several times simply age related organ failure...
Morwenna's sister Mererid has sadly died last month, just 9 days short of her 8th birthday. She needed an emergency spay when her non-hormonal fluid-filled cysts suddenly put on a massive growth spurt but has enjoyed another 2 1/2 years of life thanks to her op.

I have not noticed blood, the only reason we found out about it was during the surgery for the spay her bladder showed cystitis. I feel awful that we had ZERO clue. I would love to hear any help with how to get her over the cystitis. I am not sure if what we are dealing with right now is still pain from the spay or pain from the cystitis. She does get (0.1mg/kg) 1.5mg/ml Meloxicam once a day....so my thought is that would help with her appetite. We are jumping through hoops to get her to eat, we do the syringe feedings and she is very interested in food but just does not want to bite. She will eat some butter leaf lettuce , that is about eat...and hay.
