Hello,

Just seeking advice and wondering if others have experienced the same. My 4 year old sow has had chronic UTI for a couple of months now. Recently, it was found that she has Corynebacterium which was the main cause of her ongoing condition. She used to be on Ciprofloxacin (apparently this bacteria is hard to get rid of so she was presided cipro) for a week but she did not tolerate that very well (she quit eating and drinking). Now she’s on Baytril, and she is supposed to be on it for a month. I’m wondering if anyone’s piggy has been on the meds for that long and what is your experience? How did it affect your Guinea pig?

To note, she’s on critical care once a day. She’s eating a lot more and drinking as well.

I am sorry for your girl! I truly hope she can heal soon with Baytril 🙏

Momo used Baytril for 21-28 days (I can't remember if it was for 21 days or 28 days exactly) but without Baytril for all this time he certainly wouldn't have recovered... During the treatment, although I saw him eating and drinking, he lost weight and had several soft poops.

The only advice I would give is to weigh her once a day in the morning before meals, this will help you monitor her weight.

I have had several piggies on month long double courses of zithromax (which is a much stronger antibiotic than baytril) for abscesses and saving eyes where a removal operation wasn't an option and I needed to step in feeding support once the digestive bacteria got impacted too much.

I also know of several piggies who needed to be on long term antibioics to keep an incurable infectious problem under control.

What I would recommend is to be very generous with probiotics and also give poo soup (live guinea pig gut microbiome transfer from a healthy companion not on antibiotics) twice daily if that is an option. Don't give any microbiome support within 1 - ideally 2 hours of the antibiotic either side as baytil is one of the antibiotics that also impacts more strongly on the 'good' digestive bacteria than others.
The active ingredient in baytril is called enrofloxacin, so you are still in the same class of antibiotics.

Soft poos are normal (impact on the microbiome) but it can also cause gradual loss of appetite or sometimes a very fast negative reaction. It depends on toleration and also on the dose - the larger it is, the more likely you are to see an impact on the gut or a negative response.

I am very sorry that you are in such a difficult situation.

Please make sure that you are giving any feeding support as soon as needed and as much as needed.

HUGS

My guinea pigs had pneumonia in 2022. 2 had Baytril for a month and Brillo had it for 2 months.

They all needed syringe feeding at varying rates and they also had supplementary probiotics.

Sending your girl healing vibes and wishing her a speedy recovery.
