Hi there! My 3 year-old boar just came down with a URI. I know I caught it early, but wanted him to been seen ASAP. I spent hours yesterday calling around and finally found someone to take him today (I just moved to this state, so that didn't help!). It's a HUGE teaching hospital - the reviews online were not the best, but I had no choice. I also have an appointment with the local vet for Friday, so I figured, worse case, he can get started on an antibiotic now and I can still take him to see the local vet on Friday. This boar has never had a URI but was treated with Baytril years ago when his brother had one. They were given .35ml then.

He now weighs: 1.27 kilograms
He was prescribed 20mg/ml oral suspension at .6ml every 12 hours.

I'm trying every calculator online but I just can't seem to figure this out. I know he weighs more than before, but does this sound right?

The most concerning part was when the doctor called me (we had to wait in the parking lot due to Covid) and asked what amount of Baytril he had in the past. I can barely remember what I had for dinner last night, let alone what ml dose I gave my pig 2 years ago. 😬 All I could say was that I know it was twice a day for 14 days. When I got home I checked the amount and realized it was a lot higher! Looking around it seems like .4ml is common - but I have no idea what strength they were prescribed.

Any thoughts would be SO appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I think the dosage sounds fine, whenever any of my piggies have needed baytril it has ranged from 0.4mls for an 800g piggy to 0.5mls for a 1.1kg piggy. Baytril is usually very safe and well tolerated by piggies and is often the first antibiotic that vets will prescribe for a minor infection or the first signs of one, though some stubborn persistent URIs that dont respond to baytril sometimes need a different antibiotic- no way of knowing at this point, so trust the vet but by all means seek follow up care and further investigations from your preferred vet when they are available. Hope piggy gets better soon, it may take a week for any antibiotic to take full effect though and see an improvement!

I think that dosage sounds about right. I am a veterinary student and I and a fellow classmate calculated the dosage based off of your information and an exotics formulary and came up with the same dosage that your vet prescribed. Of course, we are still students so please listen to your vet above us, but we also calculated the dose as practice for our own education and achieved the same results.

Thanks so so much! I started googling and got scared that I may have given him too much! I really appreciate your message! 😊

That was so sweet of both of you! Thanks so much for doing the calculations! I was really trying but got so confused. I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out! Thanks again! 😊

Of course! We were happy to do it. It was great practice for us and it reassured you so it was well worth it. Hope your little guy has a speedy recovery from his URI!
