After Toffee's rapid deterioration after receiving this injection and the very similar occurance with my last guinea pig I was wondering if others have had a similar experience when this antibiotic has been administered?

Both my piggies showed stroke like symptoms after the injection and one subsequently died hours later while the other was PTS, again only hours after receiving the injection.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it but wondered if others have seen similar reactions to Baytril?

Thanks

K

i have used and am currently using oral baytril and have never had any problems. never had an injection of it though :-\

When one of my poorly piggies was at the Vet I was told she could go into delayed shock because of the injection - this may have been the cause of your piggies' demises. I always opt for an oral or topical alternative if there is one available - might be worth keeping in mind for the future. Although figners crossed you wont need to use the Vets again.

I have used both oral and injected Baytril on many pigs with no ill affect. As with humans, some pigs could be allergic to it.

hummm yolande had a baytrill injection and died 6 hours later :'( :'( :'( :'( she was even given a steroid injection and i still dont know what that was for? i am going to ask when i pick her ashes up from the vets :'( so yeh perhaps some piggies do get a reaction to it?/

This is a very interesting question. Is there a high percentage of Baytril allergic gps or do they die from another cause?.

I am going to have a chat with my vet about this because it is a very important issue.

I would be interested to hear from forum members whose piggies have had possible allergic or adverse reactions to this drug. I think we need to know just how many pigs are involved.

I'd be interested in the outcome of your chat with the vet - as I said, I've lost 2 piggies and their reaction to the injection was almost identical.

Our Fuzzy died a few days after he started on baytril - he was on Baytril for a chest infection - we gave him his syringe feed one day, put him back in his cage and he seemd to have some sort of seizure and died. We were heartbroken.
Also our Tiger had bad tummy ache after Baytril - we stopped giving it to him.

Maybe I have been lucky and have had no problems(that I know of) with Baytril.Having said that, maybe Baytril caused a problem and I thought it was something else.I will say though that I have never had a pig with diarrheoa from Baytril.

I am cautious will all drugs, aand I will myself not take anything unless I really have to.,and this applies to the pigs as well.

There is no such thing as a drug with no side affects, and piggies can be allergic to chemical substances as can humans.I myself am very allergic to aspirin.

I do not like Baytril or Septrin but unfortunately,at the moment, there are few safe antibiotics for gps.,and if they have an infection, they have to have something.

hi
Mimi is on Baytril at the moment, and today is not herself at all, very lathargic, unresponsive, quiet and sleepy, so we're off to the vets this afternoon. :-\
