Hi guys

A few weeks ago I had to take one of my boars to see the get. He had been wheeking a great deal when urinating and the vet confirmed a UTI. He was prescribed batyril twice a day for at least a week. Everything went well and he got back to his usual self.

The last day or so he seems to be struggling again but this time it appears to be when he is passing faeces as opposed to urinating. I have a couple of questions:

I have plenty if batyril left over, is it safe to use after a couple of weeks?

What could this problem be? Is it still related to a UTI and should I be back to the vets?

Thank you in advance

I'm a student vet nurse, and baytril is a prescription medication. If you are going to use it i recommend that you ring your vet first and explain the situation and see what the vet says, also, males tend to get things called blockages, which aren't good and can lead to catheterisation...so I would deffinately consult the vet first.

I would ring the vet, Baytril can sometimes cause issues with the gut. Septrin would have been better for a UTI. Males can get impaction but it doesnt always have any symptoms. Are the poo's normal?

x.

Thanks for the replies guys. The poos are all normal and he is otherwise happy and healthy. I think there is a cavy savvy vet just up the road from me. I'll get in touch with a vet and see what they say.

You may need to use a probiotic too as Baytril is harsh on the guts, that is if you havent already, hope your piggy ok :)

Hope he is going to be fine. Yes, do you give him Pro C and Bio-lapis?
You need to find a vet who will x-ray him for bladder stones without general anaesthetic and test his urine.

Our boar was screaming when pooping and he was diagnosed with guinea pig equivalent of Gout disease after being on antibiotics that didn't work. On x-ray it shows as small bits around seemingly healthy joints.
He had bladder lining inflammation, which causes pain when pooping. We had to find mineral water that has less than 4% calcium and we excluded certain food like spinach and parsley from his diet for a while as well as anything that is high in protein. He's not getting worse, which was the case before treatment. But we are also taking prescription medications.

Have you tried speaking to Vedra?

I would strongly recommend a probiotic. I used it on Eyebrows my piggy whilst he was being treated for a UTI. Incidently, he was prescribed septrin and is making a full recovery. I bought my probiotic from P@H (iknow, I know, but nowhere else sells it where I live).

Or you can ask your vet for some.

I would definitely consult the vet about his gut sounds.

From experience and reading, any anti-biotic can affect the gut and digestion. Your vet may need to give him zantac or similar to help with his gut movements. I would do so quickly as gut problems can become serious relatively quickly.

One of our boars had a really bad reaction to engemycin and needed emergency gut stasis treatment. This is an extreme example but anti-biotics naturally affect the digestive system in some way. You may just need a probiotic or you may need something stronger like zantac.

Fingers and paws crossed for you and the little piggy :)
