So we got our house renovated and the Guinea pig room got knocked down (they had a special room so the cat & dog couldn't get at them) so we put them in the guest room which is not used 90% of the time. My sister came home from uni for Christmas and now my parents are insisting my piggies stay in a bathroom. It's is warm and safe but is it hygenic? The toilet is still in use and I think the flushing scares them. Please help and if it is a risk to my Guinea pigs health please give reasons why as my parents are not going to relent very easily

Welcome to the forum !

To be honest, I've never used the bathroom to house my piggies but I've been advised against it. The chemicals used to clean the bathroom could be a large hazard to their health, which would be my biggest worry. I'd also be worried frightening them every time using the bathroom. It doesn't seem very hygienic, but I suppose it depends on how clean the bathroom is and how often it's used?

Hopefully others have better input :)

There are better reasons (i.e. every other reason :))) but I'm not sure I could look a piggy in the eye whilst peeing. I mean, sure, mine look at me while they're peeing, but the other way round? ...odd!

*stares deeply into piggies' eyes*
*piggy stares back*
"Please look away...please oh please..."
*piggy keeps staring*

*Aside*

My mum used to allow our Yorkshire terrier in the bathroom while she was having a bath. I was like "He's like a brother to me, he's virtually human, how can you do this?!" :))

I'd be potentially concerned about the high humidity that bathrooms often have; if not all the time (with a good extraction fan) then intermittently as people use the bath/ shower.

I agree with @GPcrazy about your bedroom probably being preferable.

Hey there! Just a quick update.
Can't keep them in my bedroom sadly, parents are very against it. We don't have a bath or shower in the bathroom and recently I've kept an eye on the temperature and it averaged at 23/24 degrees Celsius which I know is very hot for piggies but parents refuse to listen :( and thanks for all the info!
