Hi everyone

I hope everyone is staying safe and is well just a quick question I finally made a c and c cage for my boys but it's using so much woodchipping and Sawdust I'm going through 2 bags a week.

I was wondering if I used bathmats would that be suitable and a little bit cheaper. I could put puppy pads underneath them but I'm worried that once the boys pee on them it won't absorb and my boys will be wet.

Will bathmats work as I can't afford the blankets at the moment? Also will it make the boys wet if they step on the bit where they pee?

Thank you all stay safe and well xx

Yes they can work. I use fleece liners (made myself) and put bath mats on top.

BTW Sawdust shouldn’t be used with guinea pigs due to their sensitive respiratory system.

PS you can buy a fleece and just use that. You just have to make sure it wicks - the urine will soak through and be absorbed by whatever is underneath. You don’t have to buy ready made liners. Just something for you to think about.

We use a bathmat in our small cage, covered with a synthetic baby towel. Bathmat absorbs urine and the towel keeps the poogies dry as it lets urine pass through it. You can also use an old fleece jumper to wrap the bathmat.
Oh wait, I'm speaking about cotton bathmat.

Did you mean sawdust? Or wood shavings?

Lots of people use the word 'sawdust' by mistake when they actually mean wood shavings.

Mention the word sawdust and everyone's like 😳

I use Sawdust and woodshavings depending on which one I can get due to lock down the pet shop has only stocked woodshavings but I usually use Sawdust xx

Sawdust is usually sold for mice, hamsters etc and the packs are small. If you buy wood shavings you can buy bigger packs and it works out cheaper.
