Not quite the evening we were expecting.
After being away, for the weekend.
Mr Basil has Haypoke.

We are just back from the vets. She managed to get the hay out & said he has a big ulcer. We have clorogen drops to administer every 4hrs, for the next 48hrs. Also optixcare eye lube, to administer 1hr after. Along with Metacam once a day.
Recheck with regular vets in 2days.
Basil is now feeling very sorry for himself & is sporting a very fetching green eye from the dye.

Hi

OUCH! :(

I am very sorry for your emergency trip but good to have it seen promptly and to have seen a competent general vet to prescribe what you need - chloramphenicol (which is a stronger antibiotic for more severe eye injuries), metacam to help with the pain and the swelling and rehydrating repair gel to support the healing process.

Please have your piggy checked again sometime in the coming week latest before the weekend to ensure that the healing process is on course.

PS: Make sure that you leave a 6 hours gap during the night for you to get some unbroken sleep if possibleso you do not end up as a zombie. Just do the eye first thing in the morning and then last thing before you go to bed but try to get the 6 lots in over the course of the day, spaced as evenly as you can. I've been there with my Nosgan where we weren't sure whether we could save his eye but in the end his eye looked normal again and he even regained degree of sight.

Well done for getting seen so quickly. I hope the eye heals really fast so you don't have to get up too many nights running.

Thank you Wiebke, unfortunately due to working hours, & the timing this evening- tonight I will have to get up to make tomorrow smoother.

The first one or two days are always more difficult when you have to shift things around. Just try your best and get it in as best as you can.

All the best. Your prompt vet trip and good care are going to make all the difference in the healing chances so it is worth the hassle.

As poor Basil 😞 Both my Ella and Esme had hay pokes last year and the vet pulled huge grass seeds from their eyes. Both girls had big ulcers but thankfully their eyes had healed at their recheck a week later

I hope Basils eye heals well x

Thank you everyone.
Think Basil’s doing ok, we have just had a chase off- with a lot of humping sideways!
Basil really doesn’t appreciate all the extra handling.

He will become a little more cooperative when he realises that all the fuss is making his ee feel better in a day or two.

Make use of our piggy whispering tips by asserting your dominance as the top piggy. The practical tips are in there and they also work in that kind of situation: Who is the Boss - Your Guinea Pig or You?

For any drops, you gently pull down the lower lid and aim the drops into the resulting gap. Gel you gently dab on the middle of the eye surface where it can melt without catching on a lid.

Thank you everyone.

Boys! 🤦🏼‍♀️ Basil had the eye lubricant around 7pm, handled, checked over veg etc, after the worst of the chase off. All fine. 9:20ish, more eye drops- handled all fine. 10:15pm….. massive blob of boar glue& I mean massive, almost dry. On his front leg & side. (Sideways was the theme!)
Took both of us to get a lot of it cut out, but it’s right on his skin.
It’s def harder this morning, but he’s left it alone so far. Keeping everything crossed for the rest of today. 🤞🏽

Vet check this evening.
Poor Basil is not having much luck.

Basil’s vet is happy with his eye & although she didn’t see it on Sunday- says it looks really good considering. We have to keep going with drops until Saturday but 3/4times a day no longer every 4hrs.

As to the boar glue- well it’s staying until it falls off or grows out. Basils left it alone today. Hopefully a side effect of having Metacam for his eye means no pain on the stuck skin too!
