So, Barry Humphries has died.

It's weird. Dame Edna and Lily Savage, they were the first LGBTQ+ people I was exposed to. Drag queens aren't transgender, obviously, but growing up in the 80s and 90s in Northern Ireland, it's not something we generally saw. I don't remember seeing anyone transgender before I was 18, which was a long time to grow up without it.

So, while neither of them were transgender, I feel like I owe them just a bit for letting me know that, hey, this is normal. This isn't a bad thing. And it feels a bit weird that now, they're both gone.
 
Yes definitely in the 80's/90's they were the only ones who managed to make mainstream media. I remember the lesbian kiss on Brookside being such a controversial topic. You have to be so grateful for men like these two who persevered to improve the world for the LGBTQ+ community.
