hello guys :D

my slightly long haired piggy (Dooley) has started to chew it's own hair! :embarassed: any ideas what i should do about this? i think she is doing it to herself as there are 2 areas that have avoided being eaten - one is right at the back and the other is ontop of her head! i've read that they can do this through boredom or even stress... i've not changed anything about their living conditions etc. She shares her home with 3 other girlies...

any ideas greatly welcomed! :smitten:

are the other 3 picking on her? or stopping her getting food? does she get play time? does she seem happy in herself? maybe check through her fur to see if she has mites or lice to play it safe. perhaps a vet trip or someone here will be more help than me. wishing you luck. sending hugs. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: girls send :-* :-* :-* maybe a fur trim would help too.

It might not be Dooley who is chewing her hair espcially on the top the head!
See if you have made any changes like Choloe has listed and is any of the other pigs new? or is Dooley new? Are they getting enough hay?

she has always been quite introvert when with the other pigs, but when you have her out for cuddles she won't sit still! she does sit quietly when she is in her pen with the other girlies... she has managed to only chew what she can reach which is why i think she is doing it to herself... the hair on the top of her head is quite long as is the hair on the base of her rump area... i'm going to make sure that there is extra hay available to see if that stops her hair getting any shorter or not! O0

She's also started to follow what i would class as the dominant sow of the group and keeps trying to get her face right under Badgers bum! she looks like she is either sniffing or nibbling at her... but it is only the rear of Badger that she is doing this too.. .sometimes Badger retaliates by weeing on her... not nice, but makes Dooley leave her alone for a little while... very odd! 98)

I have checked her for mites, may dry shampoo her too just to see if that helps... if it gets worse then a trip to the vet may be the next port of call... i'll give her her dues though, she has done a very good layered effect! hehehe! :smitten:

I've got two teenage sheltie boars who do this, but they get on really well otherwise, they have unlimited hay, lots of dry food, a varied diet, loads of space - but they still do it - guess it's like chewing fingernails, a bad habit that's hard to give up! One of them looks like a shorthaired pig! You wouldn't know he was a sheltie. The other looks like he's given himself a bad hair cut with blunt scissors!

my new piggy was doing this to the older two when she first came to live with us. She was constantly running up to them and nibbling the fur on their back end when they wern't looking which earned her the name Rascal because thats what she is to them! LOL They didn't think much of her when i first put her in with them and chased her for the first couple of days but they both love her now and she's stopped chewing them. :)

i hope that she stops it soon! lol she has only been doing that recently... very amusing to watch, and i dont think she is hurting Badger... but will keep an eye on the 'fur situation' to check she doesn't go toooo far! O0
