So as use know I have 4 Male guinea pigs I have 2 that are a year old and 2 that are 10 month old. 1 of my younger boys romeo is causing trouble by chewing on the bars. I keep my piggies in my bed room far away from my bed but the problem is when romeo decides he wants food no matter what time it is he chew the cage bars he has done so much damage to them and I dont know how to stop him I fear he will loose teeth if he keeps it not only this but he chews the bars till I get up and feed him I normally give in and feed him to make him stop in the Hope's I can go back to sleep but if I dont put in stuff he wants he continues to do it. It's got past the point where waiting it out is an option I tried training him not to chew them but I stood there for 2hrs seeing would he stop and the answer is no

Sounds like he has you wrapped around his little finger, does he have plenty of things in his cage to chew on like cardboard tubes, willow balls sticks etc.

Yeah he does I try to encourage him to chew on things hes supposed to chew on

I’m having the exact same problem with Smokey... He’s one and a bit and has never really done it until a couple of months ago, but then it would just be every once and a while, now it’s constant
I pretty much always give in and give more hay, because he only does it when I’m in the room, and usually at night
I’ve got to say it is driving me mad and I definitely do need a solution, so I’ll watch this thread for interest

(We are building a new cage without bars but due to other reasons it’s had to be put off, as it’s not really needed and it won’t be a disaster if it doesn’t get done soon, would just be preferable.)

Yeah I'll keep u in the loop if anybody has an ideas my boy romeo has decided to teach his big brother rico how to master the art of bar chewing

Luckily Bacon never bites them unless I am standing right there holding food (even then it’s only ever just a nibble)
I’m going to look into more toys for them as they have destroyed quite a lot of them now

Thanks!

I usually wait as long as I can (before feeding him) in the hope that it will stop, but he’s very persistent

Maybe the best way is to ignore the bar biting (begging) and have set mealtimes, they might get the message (or not 🤔 being piggies) x
They have a set feeding time I wont feed them during the night when they wake me up I was up since 4 this morning he continued to bar bite all morning till it hit his feed time

I don’t usually do that, I just feed him whenever so it might make him stop
The problem is his feeding times vary, earlier on the weekdays and later during the weekend

Because he tends to do it at any hour 😬

They’ve got you moderately well trained.

Mine are biters and so rather than give them what they want (nuggets) I stroke their head. A minute later when away from the bars they got nuggets so I’m breaking that link slowly between their cause and effect of “if I want nuggets I bite the bars and the hoomans give me nuggets”

Yeah I'm like that i feed them before school then when I'm on holidays they expect food at that time

I tried that but I pet him he runs of then goes back to biting bars

They are naughty little monkeys! Ear plugs at the ready, what about a blanket over the cage overnight? 😆

You could attach the blanket inside the cage by using clothes pegs or something similar, so your guinea pig cannot get at the wire to bite. I had a guinea pig who damaged his incisors by biting the bars so I would advise you to keep a close check of his teeth.
That's a good idea I will try it he is very good when it comes to opening his mouth for teeth checks

It’s certain noises my boys respond to (bags crinkling, or my bed creaking, indicating I’m waking up and I’m going to feed them)
My boys respond to me when I whistle but I had surgery on my nose now when I deep sleep my nose whistles

I’m going to try this tonight, only problem is that their bottles are attatched on the outside of the cage hanging in where they bite the bars

If I were to put a blanket in it would block those out... I’ll see if I can make it work though

I do seem to remember Wiebke telling me (on a previous thread) tooth problems from biting the bars were quite rare, although I do suppose it’s always a concern

So I did it and it seems to have worked!
Thank you!
