I was going to resurrect his old eye thread, but that refers to an injury - or several - and his problem right now is an eye that doesn't drain properly, like a blocked tear duct or...something.

He's had that eye looked at a lot. There's no injury there, nor any sign of the abscess he had behind that eye, and the vet has said they think it's a drainage issue. It's not causing him any discomfort, but earlier it looked like he was crying white tears from that eye and I can't help wondering if I can't do something.

It's not a lubrication issue, it's been cleared by the vet several times. Is there any reason I should even want to fix it? I think I need someone to tell me I'm over thinking this because I'm 99% sure everything possible has been done. I've just never seen it move quite like this before.

I'm sure Thea has a blocked tear duct in at least one eye. I just clean it every day with cotton wool and filtered water. It's been weeping a bit ever since she had that bit of hay stuck behind her eye for 3 months a couple of years ago. Otherwise it's fine. She's had hay poke in it since and had eyedrops from the vet and that didn't clear it up so it's just something that we have to cope with. At the grand old age of 8 years 1 month she's still doing well, still a diva and still tells every pig and slave off if they do something she doesn't like.

Eyes! Tofu has weepy eyes/white fluid from both his eyes permanently as well. He’s been checked over a bunch after several haypokes/osseus metaplasia and he does have confirmed dry eyes so I use lubricating drops to keep him comfortable, but it doesn’t change the weepiness. The specialist told me not to worry about the white fluid as it’s essentially harmless (in Tofu’s case at least). For him it’s likely an overactive tear duct due to the dryness. The most I do is give it a wipe if it’s particularly weepy but I don’t often need to

They just like to throw more things at us to worry about don’t they!

Sounds like Bann. It usually clears itself, it doesn't sit and collect all the time, then it comes back...then it clears, and then it comes back. I usually let it clear itself otherwise I'd be picking him up several times a day and he gets cranky after the first lol.

His right eye is fine. Thank you @JaseChase, sounds similar except Bann's eye definitely isn't dry. I swear his eye was fine til he had that first haypoke last year and it's not settled since. But I feel better knowing it's not just him.

Red has weepy eyes, a grey/white fluid. The vet thinks it's partly due to blocked ducts and partly his arthritis meaning he doesn't clean himself so well these days so the natural cleaning fluid sits around his eyes. I wipe and rinse his eyes with saline to remove any crusties that might irritate the eyes further. I use human eye wash saline from Boots.

Does Red actually get any crustiness or is it just in case? I only ask because Bann definitely doesn't.

Sometimes, but not often. I think he would if I didn't wash his face though. His eye discharge is thick.

Duck's eyes are watery weepy, he doesn't get crusties. I think his happens because he sticks his face right in his hay and he gets dust in his eyes, it's intermittent where as Red's is daily.

I think it bothers me more than it bothers him tbh. Maybe I should take my cue from him?

I would keep a watch on it in case it gets worse but not stress too much. You have seen a vet with him several times and they say there is nothing that's obviously treatable. I know how you feel worrying about him but I do think sometimes as they get older these things happen that can only be managed to keep them comfortable rather than cured.

I think my problem is, if I still had Cam I'd be more inclined to take him back in, both for his eye and his lump. Except now I'd have to take him alone, and he doesn't like being there and I don't want to stress him out if I can help it. And then I find myself second my guessing the decision.

It's been years since I was looking after an older guinea pig, it all feels like new territory to me.

I know how you feel I don't like having to take Red for his 6 monthly check to get more Metacam. I dread them finding something else as his ailments are adding up and he hates going. The vets is the only time I see Red frightened, he's ever so quiet when we get home.
You are doing great with Bann. I think with the oldies you tend to run on instinct or maybe that's because I'm an oldy myself!

I have to do the same for Red now as I don't like to pull him out due to his arthritic back legs. P@H have some carriers with a lift up lid that looked better. I don't really want to buy a new one though as I have about 10 normal type ones!

Not the same thing but when my late Eliza had her eye removed back in 2013, although her eye socket was closed, it would still produce a milky fluid that we had to wipe and keep clean

May be Bann has a blocked tear duct? May be he doesn’t but you’ve had him checked by a vet and eye injury has been ruled out so perhaps it’s just one of those things? I was forever taking Eliza back to the vets who couldn’t put their finger on it and I’ll always regret stressing her out so much

So long as Bann is fine, I wouldn’t keep taking him back either and just see it as one of those unexplained things x
