Bank holiday do I have to work?

Hi, I just wondered if anyone knows if i have to work on bank holidays? My work have booked all of my holidays for me and all the previos bank holidays I have had booked off for me including this Monday 7th of May but the 27th of may they have not booked off. friends have told me I am by law intitled to this day off are they right?

Depends where you work and your terms and conditions are they repalcing the bank holiday you are working ie are you getting a day in lieu?
 
yep where i used to work, had to do bank holidays, only got a day in lieu, they only have xmas day and easter sunday off, nightmare. i left
 
it all depends what your terms of contract are, would be worth having a look at your contract.

A lot of retail places now require you to work 2 of the bank holidays mondays if your contracted to work a monday. Not sure about other places I used to work in retail but did not have to work them.
 
Yeah I'd look at your contract, but they ARE NOT allowed to book your hols for you, you are entitled to book your own holidays and as long as they don't affect trade, ie too many people have booked that week or peak rading time etc. The only time they are really allowed to do i is say, you have outstanding holiday and the end of the holiday year is coming up and you need time off or you'll lose any entitlement if you don't take hols then. I would check. Our companies rules are that if it is you normal day of work then you have to work it.

Don't mind so much as we get paid double time.
 
I think the rules have changed recently because my boss has just been on a training course about employment legislation. I am not sure what she said now, I obviously wasn't listening properly. However there is bound to be a website about it!

Just looked at a government website - there is no statutory entitlement to have bank holidays off and no entitlement to a higher payment for working a bank holiday.
