We just got this 18 month old boy yesterday, and noticed this sore spot once we got home. Any ideas what it could be, and how to treat it? Thanks20201219_090530.jpg20201219_090316.jpg

Please have him seen by a vet for diagnosis and treatment. He could have mites or a fungal infection. Please do not be tempted to use any off the shelf low dosed products as they are ineffective and can easily make the problem worse.

Do you have another piggy for him to live with?

No, he is our first piggy. I am looking at fostering/adopting another friend for him but want to make sure this one is in good health first.

Ok. Definitely have him seen by a vet for diagnosis and treatment.

Its great you’re looking to get a friend for him. Boar dating is the safest way to find a friend as he can choose his own character compatible friend which will result in a good bond.

UPDATE I went back to the shop, where I got him and asked about the bald spot on his back. They said he was treated for all mites etc. when they got him, and that they treat all their animals. She said he came from a home who couldn't keep him anymore as he was being attacked by the other guinea pigs. They told me the bald spot is a scar/war wound from being attacked. He's not distressed or scratching or anything. I'm so relieved, but nervous about getting another in case he is bullied again. He is so sweet and docile.

I would still get a vet check done regardless of what the shop has said.

A bond between two piggies only fails if they aren’t character compatible, so finding him a suitable friend via rescue centre dating service is the safest way as it enables him to find his own new friend. If you do get another piggy on spec, then there is always going to be a risk they won’t get on. In that situation you need a plan b in place of having them live in separate but side by side cages
