hiya my boy and girl are about 2 1/2 months old, they are fine when i stroke them when they are in my arms but as soon as i put them on the pillow and fed them they jump around, i really dont know what to do, and she doesnt like her head touched either, this has only been recently in the past few days, any ideas why?? :(

Its probably popcorning, pigs do this when they are excited!
Some pigs just don't like their heads being touched too, but I should think in time they will get used to it. They are probably just a big nervous :)

Do you keep your two pigs together?

:)

yeah they are, they seem fine with eachother so i aint worried about that, i had 2 boys a couple of years ago and they never did this, I'm just worried about them she jus doesnt seem comfy unless i hold her (he does it less) i dont now if it could be preggers or not so any ideas? she wheeks really bad when i get out her cage she just seems really upset first off

She could be pregnant then. Problem is shes very very young!
Sows (females) can get pregnant from the age of 6 weeks up. You need to separate them asap!

why do they need to seperated? is it dangerous, they both do he same thing though its just she does it more, sh doesnt look fat or anything

If your Guinea Pig gets pregnant at 2 1/2 months old its very dangerous, well its dangerous at any age, but particually if they are this young!
Cos she is only small herself, she will probably stuggle to give birth and nurse the babies. Sometimes this can result in death for the babies and/or the mum.
Average litter size for pigs is 3 - 4 but some have 6 - 8. You have to find homes for all the babies too if you can't keep them. Baby Boars (boys) have to be separated from sows at three weeks because they can get them pregnant again, so it means buying more cages as well. Also if sometime goes wrong during the birth of the pigs, you'd need a vet, and costs for a c-section (if needed) aren't cheap!
If you haven't already, i'd quickly buy a new cage and separate. Then think about neutering the boy so he can live with the girl. Just hope she isn't pregnant!

xx :)

thanks for the help, would that be the only reason for the jumping around, its only when i stroke them if i aint holding them

sort of but only when i stroke her when she on the settee on my lap

Oh yeah the pig in my Avatar does that. If you touch her head or her sides, she flicks about.

They might be jumping about because they're happy? But yep totally agree with Sophie, you need to seperate them, the chances are she's probably already pregnant.

That will mean any number of babies - I think the max they have is 6? and obviously the minimum is 1. I'm assuming you can sex the babies, males will need to be seperated from females at 3 weeks, otherwise they may make their mum & sisters pregnant :( Don't put your male and female back together after the birth, even for a few moments as he will make her pregnant straight away again and this is also dangerous for the female.

Are you in the UK? Some vets will neuter your male guinea for you so he can return to the female after the birth, or if you don't want to risk an operation, he could live with any sons he produces.

Hope that helps :)

I'm confused :-\ did you not know that 'boy + girl = babies?'

you've put your pig in danger, lets just hope shes ok

they arent related are they? :-\

thanks but yes i do realise that boys and girls make babies, was told the mate at 3 months thats why i was confused

No they don't ;) from about 6 weeks up.

Have you managed to separate them? :)

boars are able to get a sow pregnant from as young as 3weeks and sows are able to get pregnant from 6 weeks :)

hopefully she wont be pregnant but it is likely she will be, give her extra fruit and veg as she will need alot more vit c if she is pregnant :)

try not to handle her too much either as this could stress her out or cause harm to the babies, likes others have said they need to be seperated asap, maybe you could get him castrated so that they can be together again :) and if she does have babies make sure you seperate the boys at around 3weeks old, so you may need another cage so they have somewhere to go.

if it was the petshop who told you they dont mate untill 3months old then i would demand that they give you a cage :)

also weigh her to check her weight, this could be an indication of whether shes pregnant :)

have you got a good vet?

no i havent gt a vet, hw much weight would she put on per week if shes pregnant?

I'm not sure if she would put on a certain amount per week, but you would soon notice her getting rounder and she would start having small lumps on her sides - babies!
Please take the advice of forum members, I hate to say it but they know more than pet shop people ;D

you should find a good vet cause there can be problems especially in younger sows.

baileys is definately not pregnant! jd has calmed down, but she hadrly lets me touch her even is I'm holding her now, she tends to run up me onto my shoulder, any ideas??
