Hi everyone,

Toffee suffers from IC and she usually has flare ups every couple of weeks, but I’m keeping everything the same in her diet and routine, to try prevent it from happening, but it still happens anyway.

She always gets bad poops before a flare up, but not sure whether the IC is causing them or her diet.

The veg that I give her daily are only red pepper and romaine / little gem lettuce, I really would like to give her a more varied diet, but it just sets off the IC, last time I tried to give her coriander, she had the worst flare up she has ever had 😬.

With regards to her routine, I try to keep it the same everyday, so I spot clean 2x a day, I give them a big lot of fresh hay 2x a day, I give them a heat pad 2x a day even though their room is heated to be a constant temp. They get the same amount of pellets daily too.

Toffee is on her 0.31ml of dog metacam twice daily and her glucosamine too, but flare ups still keep happening with them in her system.

She doesn’t have the greatest stomach as it’s so sensitive, I don’t know what sets it off so much, she always has mushy poops on and off, she could go a week without mushy poops then return the week later, I’ve just ordered her some FibrePlex to try sort out her stomach before a flare up starts, but I’m not sure if the poops are a sign that a flare up is on the way or not?

Would Toffee’s diet be ok for the long run even though it only contains 2 veg? And would the lack of variety for veg contribute to her having an upset stomach so often?

Was getting some fibreplex the right thing to do? If so, what would be the recommended dosage for a 940g piggie?

Is it normal for a piggie to have a stomach upset before a flare up starts? or does the stomach upset cause a flare up?

Hi

Individual symptoms in the run up to a flare can vary; if you regularly observe funny poos shortly before one starts, then it can well be an early warning sign. A couple of my sows produced a cluster of calcium pees just before a flare so that was one of my own alerts. Because you observe your piggies more closely you become more sensitive.

If it is unrelated, then hopefully a day or off fresh food will sort it. I can however not comment on your diet without you stating what veg you are feeding. Please be aware that in our own forum experience the problem is not so much with what you are feeding but with any new/less oftten fed veg or grass you are introducing or with any changes in amount, especially upping a food. It can well be that your piggy'd digestive system is becoming even more sensitive on such a restricted diet.

Oh gosh, I didn’t think that restricting her types of veg would be making her more sensitive, that’s the last thing I would have wanted to happen. I’ll start slowly adding some variety to her diet then and see if that makes her sensitivity lesser.

Start with very, very small amounts on a daily basis but not until the poos have settled. The fibreplex dosage is the same - one turn.
