I have 2 girl guinea pigs and they absolutely love their fleece blanket but I cannot get the odour out. I have tried soaking it in warm water and washing it with vinegar and non scented washing detergent and nothings working. My mum doesn't like the thought of me using the washing machine so i have to hand wash it. Any suggestions in what I should do? Many thanks

I have the same problem but I think it’s when I overload the washing machine with blankets.Could you use a horse wash bag to wash them in? It will protect the machine from hay and hair.Ive also heard halo detergent is very good for piggy things.

I use a horse wash bag to keep hair out of the washer. I also soak my fleece in vinegar before washing it. it really helps with the smell.

Welcome.
I also hand wash fleece beddings for my Finn and Lara. After washing them, I soak in vinegar water and just leave it in there. It eliminates bacteria as well as odor. I have several sets of fleece beddings to cover when others are being washed.

I love how mine go to the bathroom in their hay tray so there is very minimal pee on the fleece bedding. I do change the hay tray very often, like every other day.

I use a horse washing bag so the hair and hay stay in the bag. I use halo detergent which kills the bacteria. It works well. You can add vinegar to the rinse but I've never needed to.

60 degrees wash with halo detergent then an extra rinse to remove any detergent residue gets rid of any odours in anything! Alternatively any hospital wash product would work... I think you do occasionally need a hot machine wash with some kind of disinfectant or detergent though even if you usually wash by hand...

The only halo washing detergent I've managed to find so far is the one for sportswear. Can't find the ordinary stuff so I just use non-bio instead for my fleecy items. I have a very good and quite large horsebag too. Works a treat. I just shove it on the radiator to dry then turn it inside out and shake the hay over the garden. :)

We've been using halo for sportswear on our own clothes recently as its supposed to be antifungal and we are worried about ringworm. But I think it definitely shifts fusty smells with one wash in a way other detergents dont. I wouldnt use it all the time but once a month then a good rinse/second wash with no detergent I can see the benefits!

I think the petware version is only available online … and only available in 500ml bottles

500ml Paragon Flea & Mite Laundry Detergent

I've switched to using the Sports wash as I can get that for £4 a litre from Sainsburys :shh:

Do you put the washing detergent inside the horse bag or not.? Sorry if this is not a good question

I use the sports halo which as @Veggies Galore says is cheap and easy to find in sainsburys. You don't put it in the horse bag but in the detergent dispenser. I often throw a few non piggy things in too and all come out smelling fine.

I put the detergent in a detergent cup (like you get with a Persil bottle) and put it inside the horse bag. The only problem with this is you need to wash the cup out afterwards cos it's covered in hay!

I use an old pillow case to protect washer from hairs etc and wash any fleece items at 50 degrees, then tumble dry to kill any existing germs. It all comes out smelling lovely!
