Bacitracin warning

Hello, a little while ago I made a thread about the devasting passing of one of my pigs. I was so confused on what happened and now I come bearing news on what did happen.

Completely out of my control- ointment with bacitracin was used in my guinea pig's eye over the course of 3 days(?) And she passed away because of it.

Bacitracin is horribly toxic to guinea pig's and can and will be fatal to them. Make sure to check ingredients on whatever your using on your pigs, I unfortunately was unable to do anything about it.

Thankfully it was not prescribed by the vet. The vet actually prescribed the correct ointment. It was my mother that refused it and insisting on using a different one that supposedly had the same ingredients. I was stressed out back when it all happened that I didn't know exactly what to search for when looking up if the ointment was toxic or not.

I am very sorry for your tragic loss. Especially as you have done all the right things yourself.

This is one of the reasons why we are not supporting home treatment on spec; apart from the fact that here in the UK medication dispensing regulations are much stricter than in the USA.
