we got baby pru last weekend - she's 6 weeks old and was the last pig in the pet shop so she came alone. she's a house pet (we don't have outside space) and i've given her a nice, big cage and she comes out regularly.

my question is about the noises she makes. i know pigs are quite vocal, but i'm having trouble establishing whether she's upset or excited. when she's out having floor time, and me and my little girl sit down, she'll come over to us, so i'm pretty sure she's not too nervous of us. it's just the loud wheeking that's bothering me. she also sits on my shoulder/in my cardigan and grinds her teeth.

i'm feeling guilty worrying whether or not she's happy!

some advice would be very welcome.

If she's approaching you then I don't think there's anythng to worry about. The loud wheeking noises are either happiness and excitement or alarm bells to other piggies - just make a mental note of any other sounds or actiions in the vicinity just prior to the wheeks and you'll be able to work it all out.

Good luck with your piglet! O0

ps Welcome to the Forum!

A couple of mine grind their teeth sometimes, apparently its a sign of pain but i think they do it coz they feel like it most of the time to be honest! Does she wheek really loud when she's getting food? mine do it when they think they stand a chance of getting some food off me lol! or when they hear chopping or a bag rustle! its usually food related! mine wheek for eachother too if they cant find eachother. or if they find a way out of somewhere they wheek to let the other know lol! it could be a number of things! Mine rarely wheek when they're unhappy, they usually rumble if they're upset or angry. If you think one is noisy you should hear the vocals when they have a friend to talk to ;D could you get her a friend? the girls especially do better and tend to be happier in pairs :) x

thanks all. i'll just be content that she's not fretting at the moment if she's approaching us. she does tend to make more noise when i leave the room - perhaps she's wondering where i am? don't really know about getting another one just yet.
