Hi there
I rehomed 2 baby sows yesterday afternoon. 8.5 weeks. When I collected the lady said that they were born with cradle cap. She had given to Pets At Home for advice (sigh) and they advised to treat with coconut oil 3 times a day. She said it had cleared considerably since then.
I have given them a good inspection. One girl has a bald patch to top of head, that appears to have some very short almost velvety regrowth that. There is also however a patch to the back of her had/neck that is bald.
Upon checking the other sow over I have found a bald patch to her back.
Both will be at the vets tomorrow in any event, as we get also our rescues/rehomes an initial official check over.
However, I’m interested…has anyone ever heard of babies being born with cradle cap? I haven’t. However, the patches themselves aren’t something I’ve personally seen before. They aren’t v shaped like I may expect of mange. There is no visible crawlies. There is no sore or wound. No itching. The areas do look quite dry and maybe a tad flaky skinned. I was thinking ringworm, but I would expect that to have been around face/eyes/nose, at least initially. I messaged the lady and she said that the current condition is 80% improved from being born. She said it had been to five and ears but coconut oil had done the trick. I’m confused. Would ringworm be solved by such a thing? I would have expected it to get worse without proper treatment.
Naturally, right now I aren’t offering treatment as I don’t want to make assumptions and make a problem worse by having guessed. It isn’t an emergency and can wait until their check tomorrow, as it appears not to be causing them any distress. We are being mindful of self hygiene also, until we can rule out anything contagious. The girls are of course in quarantine anyway, with them being new to our home.
For general info, we keep our piggies indoors and we use fleece liners.
I would be super interested to hear your views though or from anyone who may have experienced the same thing with babies.
