i have 4 baby piggies that were born last Tuesday 1 of the sows is losing weight and has lost 15 grams since she was born, i feel terrible because ive been in bed ill for the best part of the week so only noticed today how thin she is. Ive mixed up some milk and tryed to encourage her to feed but she doesn't seem interested, any advice would be great

Guinea pigs are lactoze intolerant so i dont think you shouldnt give milk even to the babies...i may be wrong?
I dont know much about things like this, someone on here will most probably help you.
Good luck with the baby. I hope she gets better xx :)

I would feed her Critical care if she isn't getting enough food herself, I know most people won't give any kind of milk but not sure if its something that you shouldn't do period! also maybe take her to the vet as she shouldn't be loosing weight really. Hope someon can advise. x

Same as above but also syringe water hourly if she is not drinking as she may dehydrate. Try coaxing her with small bits of fruit/veg.

she had a bit of a munch on some carrot earlier but wasn't very interested, i was reading through some old posts and critical care was not recomended as a substitute for mothers milk as its meant for recovery from illness and surgery. Just had mom on my lap and baby has been feeding so i ll just have to keep doing that, mom seems to be quite grumpy towards the babys and tries to push them away when they want to feed. All of the others have gained weight and are very active.

Far as I am aware Critical Care is ok to give babes, of course it doesn't subsitute mums milk but it helps a little. Can someone advise on this for future reference please. :)

Sounds like babe just needs encouraging, good luck with tempting her. :)

hoping the little baby is going well, our vet use to sell wombaroo subsitute milk for all animals including for guinea pigs, was told it is as close to guinea pig mum's milk as they could get. sending hugs to your babies and hoping mum gets over her post natal depression :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Hi guys.now i know most will disagree but when i first got my pigs i was told to feed mum and bubs pellets soaked in milk and did so for the first three refugees.they were all fat and healthy! mabie a little too fat.I dont do it anymore though as i dont want to do them any un needed harm

A few years ago I had 5 babies that sadly lost their mums within a couple of days of each other and they were only about 5 days old and I bought lactol from the local petshop and syringe fed them and they soon grew up into big bouncing piggies. They used to fight to get to the syringe first. ;D

With their mummy just the day before she died. :'(

We all used to feed them because it was the long school holidays fortunately. It was so funny to see them fighting to get the syringe though - they were such greedy little things. ;D
