Hello! Long time no see :) Random question - what options are available for pain relief for a 2 week old underweight sow (100g)? I know meloxicam is 4wks+, but would infant calpol be safe and if so, what dosage?
Many thanks!

Hi!
I am sorry; that is outside of my own area of expertise but perhaps @VickiA or @pig in the city know better what you can use safely.

I am sorry. I have never used medication in a pig so small and so young. You need to ask a piggy knowledgeable vet.
Why does the piggy need pain relief?

So piggy and me went off to the vets this morning! We have named her Crumpet ❤️ I had a text from a lady we've dealt with before whilst I was at college (student VN), asking if I could help.

If any of you remember baby Pepper the lethal white with a chewed up foot - this is the same lady. We've also taken in a heavily pregnant sow who had been unwell for some time - convinced it was heat stroke the lady had gotten her wet in the shower. It was clearly not heat stroke - she had advanced toxemia to the neuro stage and we took her straight to the vet. Sadly nothing could be done and we had to let her and her unborn babies go over the bridge 🌈

So anyway, back to now! I had this text and the lady has decided to stop breeding. She's rehomed most of her pigs - except this orphaned baby girl, who was born 20/12. She's very underweight and limping badly - her front left paw. She has used it to wash but isn't weight bearing. She's been stuffing her tiny face all night and today which is good, and plenty of poop! But it was causing her some pain.

So our vet has checked her out and the issue is around her elbow - lots of swelling and although she can't feel a fracture it's a difficult place and can't be ruled out. We're hoping it's soft tissue injury and are trialing off license use of meloxicam under the vets direction! If no improvement she'll need to be xrayed 🤞
