Hello, we rescued a female guinea pig a few days ago, she’s around 7/8 weeks old. Whilst having her out for some lap time this evening, she has done a couple of wees which have come out pink. She didn’t cry whilst doing them or show signs of discomfort.

I’ve panicked and immediately booked her an appointment with our exotic vet for tomorrow morning. However, having done a little Googling it has occurred to me it might be due to eating some carrots? Although they had carrots two days ago, could it still cause her urine to be pink? I will still have her checked obviously, but am worried about her being so young and possibly having a UTI or something! So praying for the best outcome and some reassurance. Does this look like blood to you?

Thank you!

You’ve done exactly the right thing by booking a review with your exotics vet. Not all guinea pigs will show outward signs of obvious discomfort. In the early days of a UTI the urine can be pink in colour so it will need to be tested. It would help your vet if you are able to collect a sample before you go for the appointment. I will see if I can find you a link on how best to collect one.
