A day ago i got the sad message from my friend that her baby guinea pig (only a couple months old) had passed away. As a guinea pig owner myself I found this very sad and made me worry about my own pigs.
Last time I visited her and her guinea pig’s I noticed the one who later passed had a spot without fur which was rather peculiar as baby guinea pigs don’t usually fight, especially not siblings. I got to pick her up and felt her whole stomach being completely naked- only with a short frizzy coat. Her hair on top was also thinner than I had remembered. As the more experienced guinea pig owner, I told my friend that this could be a sign of disease, but she shrugged it off. The pig that passed was an Abyssinian guinea pig and as I don’t own one (I only own two short haired) I couldn’t really be the judge.
So I have come here to ask if anyone know the cause of this very tragic death.
As I have taken my guinea pigs to visit her (under close inspection of course) I am frightened it might be contagious.
I would also like to note that the pig had a huge cage- I believe a 2x4 and a 2x3 in an L-shape, as well as plenty of food and water, plus a heart broken guinea pig best friend.
