My baby guinea pig , born 15 days ago, was squeaking( cry like) since 2-3 days when peeing yesterday I was worried so i picked it up and found some red colored, blood like, thin urine. I think he is having UTI, so I decided to go to vet, who isn't experience. here in my city there are no experienced vets for guinea pigs. So he told that my baby guinea pig have infection in stomach and gave vitamin c syrup and tablet to give dissolved in water that is of amoxicillin, which i found on internet that is not good for guinea pig. I, now, am very confused about whether to give my baby that tablet or not. I am think of getting baytril which i found is good for guinea pig with uti, But i am not sure about the dosage. I cant now go to different vet because none of them is experienced here. Please help me with this on what to give it, its condition is not getting better. It is not able to pee(Its pee is all on his fur near private parts). I cant see it crying. Please help ASAP. Please tell the name of medicine i can give and dosage, and any extra care i have to do.

PLEASE do do NOT give any amoxillin as penicillin is lethal for any rodents; even more so guinea pig babies. It is the worst thing you can do. :(

Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (bactrim) or enrofloxacin (baytril) are very common antibiotics that are safe to use. The first is better for any urinary tract issues although it is a bit slower to work; it is also not as hard on the gut microbiome as baytril, considering how important constant nutrition is for guinea pigs and even more so for babies.
I have listed the antibiotics by their active ingredient first and their most commonly known brand name second so your vet can go more easily by that when choosing a locally available brand. We know from other Indian members that both antibiotics are available as a generic brand in your country.

Please show any vet you see these links here in terms of safe antibiotics and the dosages as well as a link for dangerous medications.

Thank you for your response everybody, after some dosage of vitamin c he is felling much better, popcorning with his mother. I will surely give him new medication like suggested (bactrim). I had one question like he is urinating and urine is staying on his back only, its back has become dirty and wet. so should i clean it with damp cloth ?. Any suggestions?

You can give him a bum bath with a cloth. Hopefully that will also make him feel better. I hope he’s better soon.

Wishing your little boy well! I hope that he is feeling better soon.

I would recommend that you bookmark the links in my previous post so you can have them with you whenever you need to see a vet. They are there to also help vets not experienced with guinea pigs to prescribe a suitable medication at the right dosage for guinea pigs (who have a much faster metabolism and therefore often need a higher dosage compared to a cat of the same size).
