Hi I rescued 2 pregnant guineapigs about 8 weeks ago and they have recently had there litters of 5 beautiful babies yesterday each some are a little small but they are all doing well , my only issue is 2 of the smaller pigs where born with one eye compleatly closed most had there eyes closed yesterday but now 8/10 have both open , I was wondering if they are going to open or the piggies are partically blind , I'm monitoring them tho and they are nursing and eating and exploring thanks :)

Yeah where going to take them to the vets tomorrow , I know blind / one eyed piggies tend to be okay I just wanted some more information and I cant seem to find any :)

Oh what a cutie! Hopefully it’s all okay but you’re right, pirate pigs do just fine! My Tonks was born with an eye deformity and it has never grown. It still has blood supply though so hasn’t needed to be removed. She was also born with cataracts we believe, she’s completely blind in that eye. When she’s nervous she does a funny head sway to take in her surrounds and sometimes panics and runs into things/pigs but it’s been a long time since that last happened as she’s so settled.

She’d like you to know not to worry, if they are like her they’ll be the best pigs in the world! (Yea right Tonks! 😂)

Thank you so much this was the reachrance I needed, I've had blind guineapigs before but never with only one eye so I was worried about them being under developed and not able to compete with the bigger piggies but both females are together with the pups and are both suckling them all and taking it in turns and cuddling up to them for warmth ect so I'm glad it looks like there all going to be okay :)

They’re all gorgeous! :love:
My Sheepy the pig had cataracts in both eyes and was almost completely blind but he did great! And my Pirate Pedro the chinchilla is doing amazingly with his one eye! These beasties do great without eyes/limited sight :)

You’re most welcome! If it helps, Tonks is my biggest pig and the feistiest, it’s them who struggle to compete with her! :))

They’re all so beautiful, I hope they all grow up well and to be terrible nag machines! :)

They’re gorgeous, what do you plan to do with the babies, are you keeping them all?
Make sure to remove any boys before they are three weeks old, or 250 grams
I know that Betsy’s Betsy has cataracts, and if I’m correct is blind, or almost completely blind
@Betsy

I have 22 guineapigs now with these babies I have a heard of 10 the moms are usually with them in a full room ro them selves so I hope to add the babies sows to them and then 2 separate boars in an other room but I cant really accomodate anymore so hopefully find them some really good forever homes and if not I'm sure I can convince my bf to let me get an other few c and c cadges Haha

Hello this is a very old thread I know, but I'm wondering what the outcome was for this little pig? One of our litter has this too. Everything else about her seems seems healthy at 1 week, but the eye is very furry all around. I wondered at first if she had no eye but the lid can be parted to reveal it - I was bathing it with warm salt water, but it hurt her. It's not infected, just closed and doesn't look to be a normal sized eye.

The member hasn’t logged back on since so you are un likely to get any update.

Has your piggy been seen by a vet?

Wonderfully, the eye opened naturally after being bathed in warm salt water and she's perfectly well now. Thanks for responding.
That is good to hear. Does the eye now look to be a normal size and shape, too?
