Hello All!

I’ve found myself in possession of a 4-week old baby boar. (Long story)

Proud owner of a boar duo (7 Months Old, Bonded)

With Trios having such a high failure rate, I’m not even going to introduce them/try to bond.

The baby is cute and awesome, but the existing bond of my boys is most important to me - and am prepared to take the little guy to a rescue asap.

That said - could the baby be kept in a separate cage next to my existing pair, or will that cause a potential for a bond breakdown?

Is it possible to socialize the baby with one of the pair so that he gets the proper body language socialization that is so crucial for babies during their formative years?

Trying to do right by the baby and my boys while I wait for the rescue to get back to me, if at all.

Any suggestions here are welcome.

You are right, attempting to bond him with your pair is likely to be a disaster (even if not immediately) which runs the risk of breaking the bond between the pair. Not always, but given your pair are teens, it is a big risk.

He should be kept in a separate cage alongside them but sadly he cannot have any socialisation with the pair - you can’t introduce piggies to each other and then separate repeatedly. (They don’t do those kinds of play dates as to them it is seen a full bonding session which never gets seen to conclusion . That is terribly frustrating and the effect on the bond of the pair won’t be a favourable one.)
It won’t affect the bond of the pair to have him living separately but there will be interest and you may see an increase in dominance between them.
I have four boys myself - a bonded 6 year old pair and then two single 18 months olds. The 18 month olds were a pair but they fought and have been separated for a bit over a year now. They all interact between the bars quite happily with no effect on the pair.

It’s not ideal that he is alone though, given his age, but interaction between the bars is all that can be done unless you can have a fourth boar so he can have his own new friend.
