My 2.5 yes old girl has appalling skin. She had mites which have cleared but also a severe fungal infection. She's had three rounds of Itrafungal and baths in the appropriate shampoos from gorgeous Guineas. She's lost a lot of hair, has extremely dry scaly skin and has lost a lot of weight. She's itchy but much less so than at the start of treatment I've upped the treatment to nizoral, a higher calorie diet including critical care, a vitamin c supplement and leucillin round her face.
The vet saw her today and is at a loss as to what's going on. She's a very happy girl with a good appetite and output. I'm unclear if it's still fungal or maybe just maybe exceptionally dry skin as an after effect. We decided against bloods etc as I truly don't think she'd survive the anaesthetic.
I was just wondering if anyone else has had similar or had any thoughts....TIA

Sorry that I can't be of more help - hope someone is along soon to offer advice. I do hope your girl is on the mend soon!

I'm sure you can sometimes supplement too much vit C that can lead to scurvy symptoms - so do be careful that you are not giving too much.

Sending lots of love for your girl!

Thank you ☺️
They can't store vit c so just excrete excess I believe. Lack of it causes scurvy but I'll recheck that x

You are right excess is excreted in the urine, but it is the case that long term over supplementation can lead to scurvy as their bodies get used to the higher level. If that level then drops scurvy symptoms can occur (even if it remains within what would be considered normal level for any other piggy). Any piggy on long term supplementation needs to be weaned off very slowly and carefully.

However, boosting the immune system of a poorly piggy with a short course (a couple of weeks) of additional vitamin c is absolutely fine to do.

Just wondered if your piggy is Teddy coated (like the one in your avatar)? Teddies can be prone to skin issues. My teddy Rosehip gets itchy sometimes and starts to lose fur (she mostly chews it off her belly and legs) and needs malaseb baths which is a prescription shampoo and is antimicrobial as well as antifungal. It clears up her issue completely, although it does start to return after a number of months.

Thank you, duly noted ☺️

I think she's Abyssinian but not long coated, medium cost with rosettes
