Hey,

So my guinea pig has been ill recently with a URI (luckily she is getting better). This is the second time she has an infection. So I asked my vet if there is anything which can help to prevent any further illness.

She suggested avipro C, and I was wondering if anybody has used this for their little ones and how they gave it them.

Any links to products which you have used would be great as well!

Thanks Claire.

Do you mean Pro C? Probiotic won't prevent further illness I'm afraid. Sometimes their immune system is not strong enough to fight off whatever it is.

Please can you add your location to your profile.

I assuming it is pro c. She just suggested the avipro c (that is what she wrote down).

OK... What will that help out with?

Pro C is a probiotic that is usually given when a piggy is not eating enough hay (weight loss is an indicator a piggy isn't eating enough) or is on antibiotics such as baytril. Some antibiotics can really go to town on the gut bacteria - including the good type. So giving a probiotic/recovery food helps with that. It also contains fibre which is essential to their diet.

Pro c is a vitamin c containing probiotic (As siikibam has said, probiotics can be used to help settle a poorly tummy).
It won’t stop them from getting ill but the vit c in it will give their immune system a boost. With that said, you can give an extra boost of Vit c by giving extra vit c containing veg (peppers, coriander etc).

Hi!

I have been using avipro C probiotic for my own piggies with urinary tract problems because it is the only probiotic that is not enriched with calcium. You can dissolve a pinch (or how much your vet recommends to give) in 1-2 ml and syringe it once or twice daily.
