Ive had to move back to disposable bedding as the fleece was just creating too much work for me. I put them on shavings but when they have a run round it goes everywhere outside the cage.

So I’m looking into megazorb or aubiose. Is aubiose really that sharp? I’ve read people put hay on top of it, but what else could you put on top? The other alternative is megazorb. My kids’ school has guinea pigs but I’m not sure if it’s the girls or the megazorb that give me an itchy nose. Has anyone here had that kind of reaction to it?

And lastly there’s the snowflake softchip. Is it as ‘flyaway’ as wood shavings? I can go today to buy whichever of these.
TIA

I used to use Megazorb in my bunnies littertray with hay on top. I also used it in hamster cages and found it to be very absorbent.

I'm just trying out aubiose in my hutch for the first time. It's very soft and absorbant. I popped some hay on top only cos my lot like to burrow in it. There is only a bit of aubiose that has come out onto the patio. When they are running about the cage it doesn't seem to fly around everywhere like the wood shavings do. Have yet to clean out the hutch so not sure how easy it'll be - I'll find that out on hutch cleaning day! Don't know if I'll be able to afford it though as I used about a third of a 20kg bale cos my hutch is about 24 sq ft in total and the bales are 10 quid each. So thats 10 quid every 3 weeks!

I’ve just finished a bag of Megazorb which I tried for the first time.
It is very absorbent but I found it very dusty.
I put a good layer of wood shavings on top.
I don’t think I will use it again because of the dust and I really didn’t like the smell.
I’m going to stick with a thick layer of wood shavings which has always worked.
I hasten to add that the girls didn’t complain about the Megazorb.

I use aubiose without anything on top (except for their bedding area which is full of hay) and I've never had any problems as a result of using it. Not used any of the others for comparison though

Ok good to hear it’s soft @Betsy. My cage is 2x5 @Betsy so I’m hoping it would last longer! I’m leaning towards aubiose. Think I’ll just have to go down and hopefully they can let me feel it...

Quite a few people have complained about the smell of megazorb @Merab's Slave. I don’t mind wood shavings but they make a mess when they’re kicked out. I may try the softchip, will decide when I get there

@Lady Kelly how big is your cage and how long does it last?

I have the two storey 6 ft chartwell hutch. Majority of the time I take out the dirty paets, sweep the clean stuff to one side, clean that part of the hutch, sweep the clean aubiose back over to clean the other side then spread it out and top it up. I buy 3 20kg bags at a time and this lasts me around 7 months. At the moment I have a persistent ringworm infection so the whole lot is being binned and hutch scrubbed regularly so it is going down a bit quicker.

I'm hoping to do just clean out the dirty parts when its hutch cleaning day. I have the same size hutch as you Kelly. Have just stuffed it full of hay as it's going to be cold this weekend. So hutch cleaning day will be a load of dirty hay and a bit of aubiose.

@Lady Kelly i like your method. I’ll be poo picking tonight and plan to use it. I went with aubiose and softchip in the end. I also had the school guinea pigs for the weekend and worked out it’s the megazorb that gives me an itchy nose. So if I’m to have them again they’ll have to be on my bedding, which they didn’t seem to mind so that’s good ;)

@4pigs&counting I don’t remember seeing it where I got the aubichick. But the problem is despite the fact I love aubiose, I react to it ☹️ Though only when I’m cleaning or changing it out. I bought a dust mask to wear while doing it. I’ll see how I get on with it before making a decision.
