Hello! A few times a week, my guinea pig will cough a little bit and gag before making a louder coughing sound that sounds like a sneeze. she’s always fine afterwards but we could never figure out the cause. Today, I fed her a large portion of lettuce and tomatoes, some of her favorites. However, within a few hours, all of it was gone. Right now, at the sight of hay, she opens her mouth and then begins to gag rather aggressively. It’s unsettling because it seems like she’s really struggling and is shaking her head left and right. It’s been like this for an hour now on and off. I think she ate the lettuce too fast and it got stuck somewhere in her mouth or throat. What to do?

Hello, and sorry! I didn’t see this till today. She’s fine now, thank goodness. Still super excited to eat veggies but I’ve been cutting/tearing them up smaller and giving her less more frequently. That way, she doesn’t eat too fast and choke. Thank you!

Piggies who eat too fast will cough a bit but it shouldn’t last long.
Please add a vet if this isn’t resolving as she may need help
It lasted quite a while. I didn’t give her any other veggies or pellets to eat afterward and it seemed to resolve itself. Thank you 🙏

Mine gag a little when they eat too fast, as well.. it usually resolves itself.
