I’m away on vacation, my father fed my guinea pigs some chive and I am absolutely having a meltdown. Will they be ok? They each ate two fairly long pieces. If anyone can help me please respond asap thank you

Additionally— these were only stems. No bulbs

Keep a weather eye on them to make sure they are still eating/drinking in the following hours but I don't think one stem each will hurt - in truth I used to have chives growing in my back garden and the pigs broke out and scoffed them down to the nubs. This was before I (and they) knew they shouldn't! I didn't notice any ill effects at the time so if there were any they can't have been permanent.

Pigs can't vomit so anything that goes in will have to pass through. It always happens on holiday! Keep us informed x

Piggies are well known for munching on things that they shouldn't, and as it was a daily small amount it shouldn't have any side effects.
Just tell your Dad to keep an eye on them and make sure they have plenty of hay and water and I am sure they will be fine.

Hi

Please take a deep breath.

Chives are not one of the highly toxic plants that are a real danger to life; they are in the category of 'should not be part of a regular cavy diet' in order to avoid toxins building up in the liver over time.
Like with many of the bulbous plants that are part of our human diet, an accidental little one-off won't do any lasting harm.

It is however worth noting that no part of a bulb plant should be part of a regular guinea pig diet. The toxins are also in the leaves.

You can however tell your dad to please stop hovering and just give them a check next time he feeds them but there is no reason to worry. ;)

Bless your dad 🤗. Although I’m rarely away I have written a strict do’s and don’ts guide for my piggies sitter. I’m sure your pigs will be fine but it may be worth spending time writing instructions down so you can go away with confidence in the future
