New Born Pup
Hi all, just wondering whether anyone has had success with their pigs being spayed at this vets, and if so which vet? From a worried piggy owner
Thanks,
Lauren
Thanks,
Lauren
Thank you so much. I've been seeing Loudes but have felt really concerned ever since she told me it would be 50/50 on recovery. I am wondering whether to wait two weeks to see Aidan and have him do it, he is the long term exotic vet at the moment. He is on leave until 28th but I also don't want to cause any harm by waiting longer to get it done. Very tricky x@YvonneBlue and @Posyrose both use this vets practice so may be able to advise further x
What is the reason she needs spaying? If it isn’t an emergency, I see know reason why waiting until Aidan can carry out the surgery would be a problem if that would help reassure you xThank you so much. Which vet is that?! Thanks so much for your reply xThe vet we use says he loses about one in a hundred! I had a piggy spayed last week and she came home looking like she’d had nothing done and tucked into her dinner!
I’m going to look at spaying all young sows before putting them up for adoption, as so many seem to get cystic ovary problems later in life.
It's the one I mentioned The Cat and Rabbit Clinic in Northampton. Simon and Kim Maddocks.Which vet is that?! Thanks so much for your reply x
Thanks for the info. Its just not left me that she said it would be 50/50 recovery, and that it wasn't anything to do with age etc just the pig. And then people here saying things like other vets say 1 out of 100 they lose. It just doesn't seem right.I didn't use them when I had my piggy spayed. Sadly, we still lost her but she was very sick with pyometra.
I know that the vets TEAS use has the best outcomes (The Cat and Rabbit Clinic) but it depends if you are able to travel to Northampton and how urgent the operation is. The next closest is Ellie Whitehead (The Guinea Pig Vet) who is in Matlock.
If I had a choice I would go to Northampton.
I have had good outcomes with other ops at Ashleigh (bladder stone removal, lump removal) but I got the impression that they don't do many guinea pig spays.
Thank you. Ovarian cysts on both sides (has had them twice before). Not an emergency but needs doing. Vet said nothing going on in uterus yet but doesn't look like 100% healthy uterus so needs doing to prevent anything further xWhat is the reason she needs spaying? They said the same to me which is why I went to Ellie (it was an emergency and the Cat and Rabbit Clinic couldn't fit us in). Sadly, my piggy was too sick to recover but we gave her the chance. Thanks for the info. Wow this is such great info thank you. I don't drive so am just not sure how I could get there with the pigs from Manchester.I use the Cat &Rabbit Care Clinic in Northampton for any operations if at all possible; including my spays.
Our Cat & Rabbit Clinic in Northampton | Northlands Vets
The Cat and Rabbit Care Clinic only see cats, rabbits and guinea pigs in about equal parts and have done so for around 20 years. They see lots more guinea pigs every single day than most exotics see in one or several months, or general vets in a year, so have all the practical experience with operating on guinea pigs you can wish for. They see guinea pigs from as far as Edinburgh and Cornwall for dental issues.
They also use more expensive isoflurane as a much better tolerated GA drug. It makes a big difference in the recovery chances.
That is the reason why they have the best outcome rate in the UK. Kim is a wonderful diagnostician and Simon is pure magic with fiddly operations. I basically comes down to decades of daily practice.
Great thank you!I’ve had pigs spayed at Cheshire Pets in Holmes Chapel near J18 of M6. There are 2 exotic specialists there
