Hi all! This is an odd question but on Thursdays when I deep clean the guinea pig cage (put down new fleece, deodorize the cage etc..) I wrap the fleece up with guinea pig poop still in it and dump it outside next to our back porch. Now, there hasn't been a rat problem that I have experienced or anything like that but my grandfather told me to stop dumping the guinea pig droppings outside next to the porch because they used to have a rat problem. I completely understood and told him I'd dump it further out down our driveway but I am wondering can rats actually be attracted to guinea pig poop? What can I do to avoid a rat problem with my piggies before there is a problem?

Rats will be attracted anywhere there is the possibility of food. Keeping things clean, not leaving rubbish about is the best way help. Rats are very intelligent and will work out howl get in.

We had a rat problem along the River Kennet in Marlborough last year. The council worked very hard to deal with it and put notices on all the trees telling people not to feed the ducks because of the rats.
I watched a gentleman with his grandchildren feed the ducks right beside one of the notices!

On the other hand I did laugh to see one of the swans chase a rat that was stalking its babies

I think rats are anywhere near water or sources of food or rubbish, it’s when there is over supply of food that they have a population explosion, then we all notice them. We had one in the garden a couple of years back, he was very brazen and come across the lawn and sit eating bird seeds dropped from the bird feeder, so we had to stop eating the birds until the autum, he soon went when his food source was removed, he was rather cute though

Thanks Pipdot, now I will be having frightmares going to the loo in the middle of the night 🙀
Why would you share this! Omg this is the worse thing I've ever seen. I'm keeping my toilet lid closed from now on. We do not actually live in a residential area we live in an urban area but we have a pond out next to our house and a creek that runs a little further out. My piggies are kept inside and I'm pretty diligent at cleaning their cage every night and deep cleaning every 5 days. I just wasnt sure if rats were attracted to poop. The pellets I never keep out and my piggies eat their veggies very quick since I take them away after 2 hours. But yeah I dont know how high my chances are that I could get them but that video was a freaking nightmare.

Thank you for responding. Yeah my nana has tons of birdfeeders outside which may have been the contribution to why they had a rat problem a long time ago. But I am not 100% sure about that. Anyway my piggies are inside the house and dont want to attract them inside because I have 2 younger cousins that my grandparents watch during the day. Plus I dont want my piggies to catch a disease.

I also read that as a preventive measure you can put like 5 drops of peppermint on a cotton ball in the places where you think they'd most likely turn up. I think that would be a good idea to put around the corners of my room. Would make my room smell good and it would deter them from my room 😂😂
