This morning and last night I have noticed that my 2 boy pigs are not really eating very much. Normally when I put veg and grass into their cage in the morning they go mental eating it and chasing each other for it but this morning they really didnt seem interested at all, they had a little bit but didnt seem overly bothered. It was only pepper which normally they absolutely love and it was deffinately fresh and clean. Also I put in a load of fresh new hay last night and this morning it was barely touched when normally most of it would have been munched by the morning.

I am a little bit concerned about them as you can probably understand.

We did dog sit this weekend but while the dog was here they boys were upstairs so didn't even know there was a monster in the house. Maybe now that they are back downstairs they can smell him and its making them nervous? I don't know. What do you think?

(I posted this in the health bit by accident...so also posted it here)

If you hadn't mentioned the hay as well I'd have said they're probably bored with pepper ( they can suddenly go off food - even their favourites if they have it too frequently ) but the fact that they've both stopped eating hay too is a bit different. Try them with something new and see if they'll eat it. I'd keep a very close eye on them, weigh them, and if they're still not eating by this afto take them to the vets for a check up.

I would see if you could get them to eat anything else. Are they eating their nuggets?

I am not sure if they could sense the dog. However, one day I took my usually calm rabbit to the vets but he went mental....turns out there had been a ferret in the room before him. He has always been calm at the vets since. So maybe they can.

Like everybody else said - try them with a different food and weigh daily (instead of once weekly) until you are happy with their eating habits again. Daily weight can fluctuate about 1oz/30g due to a full/empty bladder and tummy, so you are looking for bigger changes over a few days.

Up to 80% of the food intake should be hay, anyway. Perhaps they just didn't like the smell of the pepper? It can happen that piggies suddenly go off a favourite food.

ditto to everyone..........

In my experience with my pigglies if i'm in doubt i call my vets....then i chat to them what i've noticed......... i hope you have that relationship with yours :)
I do weigh my girls (and did with the boys) weekly, if they're sick i do daily so i know their intakes etc...

HOPE ALL WILL BE OK xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ...........please keep us informed :)

They are now eating! Yay!

I think I was just being overly concerned. Not sure why they stopped but they were tucking in last night so I think all is well again.

Thanks for all of your replies and advice. I was sat at work yesterday worrying away but there was no need as they were fine last night when I got home. I will keep my eye on them though just to be on the safe side.
