Hello I have 3 guinea pigs, 2 live together the one is on his own. They are all 11 months old I’ve had them since the start of this year. The Guinean pig living by himself had a respiratory infection around march this year. Then the 2 piggies living together but had respiratory infections in June so just last month. All had a week of antibiotics and got the all clear. Oreo (who had the infection last month) I thought he was still sniffing after a week of antibiotic a but he had been checked over by the vet who assured you the infection had cleared up. However now a few weeks on Oreo is still sniffing and the guinea pig living on his own is sniffing. I honestly don’t know if it’s an infection or not. I’ve been googling the causes and I can’t see any reason why they would be getting ill. They get cleaned out thoroughly every 3rd day. Everyday their bedding gets topped up. They live in a well ventilated room. They’re very settled in so things don’t scare and stress them out anymore. They’re being fine in themselves, running round, eating loads just being normal guinea pugs but the sniffing does concern me.
I'm unsure of whether it is an infection or if they are simply just sniffing? Any advice would be useful.
Also I go on holiday in 2 weeks I’m away for 10 days so I’d hate for them to get worse if it was an infection or not be able to give them the right care because I’m away. Thank you

Hi! do you use air conditioning at the moment? it can dry the air and can cause respiratory symptoms, especially when directly aimed at the cage.
If you are worried, have them vet checked as to whether they airways are clear before you go on holiday.

No we don’t use air conditioning. To ventilate the room we just open the door and window

I currently have a frail guinea pig that has picked up an URI from regularly airing the lounge in early mornings and in the evenings to keep the room as cool as possible in this exceptionally hot summer. It can happen.

Just have them checked and if necessary treat. If they are otherwise healthy and well cared for, they should get over it easily. ;)

Hope your piggy recovers quickly

Pili Pala's seen a vet and has been promptly put on antibiotics; it's not affected her food intake. Her lowered immune system from her ongoing collection of issues is making her more vulnerable. ;)
