hi all we've just brought 3 eight week old piggies. We have a large double hutch which we've put in the shed (just for winter) and lined with blankets etc to help keep warm.

I'm still a little worried about them going out all night whilst they're so little so I was wondering can they go in a glass tank just at night?
We have a very large 5 ft tank. I know they can't live in it and I know the reasons why but just for night time 9hrs till it warms up a little?

Any advice welcome
Thank you

I have a heatlamp in my outside piggy barn. Maybe you could get a small heat lamp to turn on at night?

No they can't unfortunately. They either need to be indoor or outdoor pigs, the temperature is too varied to have them inside sometimes and outside sometimes.

The best solution is to keep them well insulated with plenty of hay, bedding and snuggly places. There are plenty of fleece beds in various styles that you can buy off places like eBay or on other websites. You can also purchase SnuggleSafes (pet-friendly microwaveable heat pads).
Make sure that veggies are not straight out of the fridge, warm them to room temperature so that they are not eating really cold things.

Very importantly keep their hutch dry. This may mean having to change their bedding very frequently. Damp just absolutely 'sucks' the warmth out of any place and makes it generally harder for them to keep warm and may lead to illness. I'm not accusing you of having a wet hutch or not cleaning it out regularly, but when it's cold it is definitely something to be aware of.

Unfortunately an aquarium would create a damp atmosphere, simply by their own breath, so with lack of proper air-flow and an increase in damp, they probably wouldn't feel any warmer than a hutch and are likely to become ill.

No to the the aquarium, I think it would be too cold to keep them outside, especially with the freezing temperature just lately, is there no chance of getting some C&C grids to make them indoor piggies

Pleased to say our guinea pigs had a great first night and seem very happy in the shed. We kept the heater on all night and it was lovely in there when I went to check on them this morning.
We're gradually going to reduce having the heater on as it's slowly starting to warm up We have a duvet over the hutch and are going to keep the door open a crack in the day then hopefully by April/may they can move outside? Does this all sound ok?

You could get snugglesafes for them - you heat them in the microwave and they stay warm (not hot) for several hours.
