My boyfriend has an apple tree in his garden and he said he could bring some branches for my guinea pigs and rabbits.

Can piggies have apple branches?
Are they okay at this time of the year?
What about the leaves? :)

I'm sure the answer is Yes to all those questions !

I'd be interested to know if anyone can say how GOOD apple leaves are for Guinea Pigs ( I suspect they should only be given as a treat ).

Branches are fine as long as the tree hasn't been treated with any chemicals .

PS - it's not a good for the tree to have branches cut at this time of year .

Thank you! :)
Do you know why it's not good for the tree?

Apple twigs and leaves are great for piggies and bunnies a with anything new feed in moderation. Their urine can look reddish after eating apple leaves so don't panic!

Apple trees should be pruned when the tree is dormant - some time between Nov and Feb . OH goes beserk if he sees me cutting branches at any other time - says it can introduce disease.
Doesn't he go beserk a lot? Needs a chill pill l reckon

Absolutely they can have them and hazelnut too I'm lucky to have them both and my boys rabbits and all love them

This is a super useful thread at the moment.
What about cherry and almond tree branches?

Oh, and whilst I wouldn't hack major limbs off of a fruit tree right now, I still trim smaller branches and twigs (no leaves here yet).

Never had any experience with those trees and the hazelnut nut tree is just producing baby leaves so I snipped a few baby twigs off so my piggies could have a taste of what's to come when the tree is in full bloom

No any fruit with a stone has twigs that are potentially poisonous, cyanide l think!

There are quite a few books on foraging for safe plants available (mainly written for rabbit owners). The rabbit welfare association have one written by Twigs Way (yes that is her name!)

Suppose it depends on the quantity given if consumed in large amounts but they can defiantly can eat Apple and hazelnut safely I only give a small stick and say about 2 leaves each piggy & rabbit with no ill effects
