Hi all

I wanted to test out newspaper and hay bedding simply because I always buy bulk woodshavings and it gets annoying.

Does anyone use just newspaper with a layer of hay?

If so how often do you change the whole cage?

I was using newspaper and hay and found I was having to put down quite a lot of hay down to cover the flooring. I spot cleaned daily and did a complete clean out weekly. I found where they had been going to the toilet the newspaper was sticking to the bottom flooring of their hutch and smelt terrible. I've changed to carefresh bedding but found it was quite pricey but it's amazing! Ive just recieved my order of megazorb bedding was just under £14 for a huge bag and is supposed to be just as good as carefresh. Absorbs all liquid in my piggies cage, doesn't smell and it expands too. Might be worth trying! me and my piggies love it! [emoji3]

I only use newspaper and hay in their littler tray and it does need to be changed every day. Could be a bit messy and hard to spot clean for the whole cage.

Only put newspaper down to go underneath their eating hay - they still drag the hay all over the fleece though.

I only use newspaper and hay in my pigs hutches. I layer the newspaper and then fill with hay to keep them warm. I also put woodshavings in the places that they wee the most.

Every 3 days I strip the whole hutch and put it into the compost heap.

I tried fleece but I cant put it in the washing machine (I live at my mums house) and I couldn't wash it properly with the hose pipe outside.

I do for my boys outdoors - they have hutches in the garden for spring to autumn and then move to their winter hutches in the garage. I use newspaper a thick layer then hay and have no problems and I clean fully twice a week and just remove any unbeaten food.

My indoor guinea Artie is on newspaper, then matting - one from Dunhelm Mill then some hay at one end.

I put the hay in the garden recycling bin here, soggy papers in grey general bin and other papers in paper recycling.

i've tried it but it gets very wet and you have to change it very regularly (twice a day) otherwise they're just sat on wet hay and paper. you could try something like fitch on top of the paper, and hay on top of that, as woodshavings are not recommended to use anyway :)

Newspaper and hey is okay, but because piggies are poo machines needs changing daily, it's mud and grass when the poo on hay and walk on it, goes all weird and like mud pies lol.

I would recommend using cotton a fleece, I brought thick double bed fleece from BNM and 7 meters on cotton and covered the fleece in cotton, and floor them with that, clean them out about ever 2-3 days, all you do is shake it down and put it the washing machine good as new, save lots of money and poo shoving lol.

Hope this helps x

i use Aubiose with hay on top the wee soaks through the aubiose leaving the top layer of it dry its £10.00 for a huge bag and they have a fleece lap blanket under their tunnels which they sleep in and they never wee on these...good piggies:tu:

I use newspaper and hay and love it. I buy big bags of hay 3-4kgs from my local independent pet shops and cover the cage in it so they can play forage and graze as much as they like. I spot clean where possible but do a full deep clean once a week and not only scrub the cage with boiling water but disinfect it too. I use cage fresh granules under the newspapers in the corners where they pee the most and this prevents the smell and absorbs and neutralises the urine. Its super fast to clean easy and no need to spend ages brushing hair and hay off the fleece (except for my beds ive made them)

I'm always changing round bedding types and when I have a good supply of newspapers I do use them with a very thick (2-3 inches) layer of hay on top over all the cage. It needs changing every 2-3 days in my cages but my pigs all get at least 4 hours of exercise time out of the cages too.
