Has anyone been to Birch heath vets?

My pig looked like he was in pain and eating slower. Took him to my local vet who couldn't seen anything major but found it hard to examine his back teeth without x rays. As his brother died following a dental issue (jaw kept dislocating), she recommended a referral to them. She said that his jaw doesn't seem to be dislocating either.

Any help is apricated.

I don’t know where you are based but if you can travel then you need to take your piggie to The Cat and Rabbit Clinic in Northampton. Kim and Simon Maddock are he best piggie vets in the Country when it comes to dental problems and they do them consciously. They have special tools for keeping the mouth open and tiny files. It takes about 10 minutes and the piggie suffers no anaesthetic problems afterwards. It cost about £60 plus a similar one off registration fee.

It's over 4 hours away from me. I was really just wanting to know what people's experience was with Birch Heath vets to know if I should take them there.

:agr: No one better than Kim and Simon for dentals

I believe they are on the forum Vet Locator, and a quick search suggests that @Kellykels and @anyar.dris have used them, so maybe they will be able to help...
I never used them for dentals. If the problem is dental and/or jaw abscess, we go straight to Cat & Rabbit. We don't trust any other vets with regards to it apart from Simon. We used Birch Heath during emergency urgent care coz it's nearer to us. If problems persist, we then go to Cat & Rabbit. Also, Birch Heath is expensive. We were once quoted £1600+ for a bladder stone surgery. We could've gone to Cat & Rabbit earlier if they have given us the quote prior to surgery and not the day itself. So we didn't go through with them and went to Northampton the following day, which Simon managed to flush out the stones and not do an open surgery. It only cost us around £300 more or less, including meds.

Birch Heath is amazing mind you. They helped us a lot with our past piggy when we were stuck with what was causing the problem with our piggy years ago. The vet who did the exploratory surgery that time has never forgotten our piggy and always mention him to us whenever we go there. They are the vets used by Chester Zoo if I'm not mistaken. But there are cases like dentals that I would never trust anyone else apart from Cat & Rabbit. Oh and if money is also not a big issue for you, then they are really great.

Thanks, that really helps my decision making!

Hope this helps you make a decision, the Cat and Rabbit would be the only ones I trust with Guinea pig dentals. Up until just before Christmas when my Ted died (unrelated issue)we travelled a regular 6+hour trip both ways to get to see Simon and have Ted’s dental work done. Simon gave us an extra 2.5 years of life with Ted, when local vets had failed him badly, and were suggesting PTS x
Good luck, hope it works out well for your little piggie 😊
