Bit gutted to have had to put a divider between Sudoku and Teacake this weekend. They have been v hormonal this week and it led to a fight where Sudoku ended up with cuts (nose, chin and 2 on lip). Sudoku is chunky nearly 2 and has been top pig to now. Teacake is nearly 18 months and a hormonal nightmare at the moment.

They have always done chasing, humping and rumbling so I am very used to that boy stuff but this was different with rearing and yawning. Poor S was trying to eat hay and Teacake would just launch at him if he was not allowed to hump. BUT they are good friends and are now chatting on through the divider. Anyone had any luck with dap for dogs? Would it take edge off hormones?

PS Teacake was a hormonal nightmare at exactly the same time last year (even though he was only 4-5 months then) - a spring thing? And then he settled.

No replies so clearly not! It is a shame as just trying to think of something but may have to concede to separating them and re-thinking. I have found another wound under Sudokus chin. They are currently settled with divider situation but it can only be a very short term option due to accommodation choices.

There seem to be some other threads about hormonal boars at the mo so perhaps there is a spring surge going on.... even though it is snowing

Sorry to hear your boys are not getting on. Mine had a fall out a couple of weeks back, which I put down to Hamish's hormones, but we persevered and they have settled down again now. I don't know about DAP. I would have thought it only worked for dogs, but I'm not sure. Hope yours settle down and become more friendly again. :)

I was going to try DAP for my boys but then I read it was based on those heated oil air freshener type things which make me wheezy so I didn't get one. I may try the spray instead. I think it is probably worth a go if you are ok with the heated dispensers. By the way, it is MUCH cheaper to shop around online for them rather than get them at the vets. Do let us know if you try it... Good luck :)

I've just found this old thread.

It seems pretty inconclusive and the more I think about it, the less I can see it working for piggies. After all, the pheromones produced by a dog are not going to be the same as ones produced by a guinea pig (if guinea pigs do produce pheromones). I suppose it could be worth a try if it's safe. There's nothing to loose except around £20. :))

Thanks for spotting that old thread - interesting but as you say not conclusive.
I have to weigh up what is best for boys. In some ways not keen on getting them back together as I am not sure I am ever going to fully trust the pairing now - and must be no fun to be caged with a partner that is aggressive to you. Problem is that the this pairing is the result of boar dating over a year ago so this is the second time Sudoku has gone through this fight split process :(

Know how you feel Merlin one of my boys has decided he doesn't like either of his cage mates and had to take him out tonight as was getting out of hand, hes very hormonal at the moment as only 6 months old.

Hi gplearner,

sorry to hear about your troubles, it is a stressful event for both piggies and their people. Have you tried any of the suggestions from the sticky taped thread about boar behaviour like bonding baths and stuffed toys? I tried both and so far it has been working for my two boys. I have no idea about pheromone treatment but I probably wouldn't choose that path. Good luck! :)
