I'm not wanting to scaremonger in any way here, especially since I haven't tried changing over to another bedding yet, but I wondered if anyone had experienced any problems with their piggies ingesting Megazorb, and would be v interested to hear.

I know my piggies take in a certain amount of Megazorb with their food (and possibly even nibble at it the rest of the time), and I have two piggies with gassy problems. Therefore, I'm going to try another bedding for a while (I've just ordered some Finacard). It might make no difference at all, but I want to cover all options.

I have used it for about 2months....but decided to go back to shredded paper (finely shredded from a work one) I find the megazorb abit messy - although I think its ace, the shredded paper doesnt cost anything, and I have it by the bucket load.
none of my piggies had any problems on megazorb and I would recommend it.

I've used Megazorb for ages - my 2 guinea pigs do tend to eat it and will actually burrow into the hay just to get to it. It doesn't appear to have done them any harm so far. It is just really paper/cardboard at the end of the day and they eat the toilet rolls I give them to play with.

I've been meaning to update this.

Basically, I have been using a mix of my usual newspaper plus Megazorb for the past 3 weeks, but with a layer of Finacard cardboard bedding on top. This means that the Megazorb is still being useful by being absorbent, but isn't being ingested by accident or on purpose by the piggies.

Anyway, I've noticed a definite improvement in the gassiness of Cassie. She isn't completely normal, but she looks a better shape and less gassy.

So, again, I don't wish to scaremonger as it probably only causes problems in certain individuals, but I do think it's important to question these things sometimes and try different things, then share them. I will definitely never use Megazorb without a protective layer on top for either rabbits or guinea pigs again.

mine eat the megazorb too! no problems so far. Tiger is no longer on megazorb but when he was I would go up to him and he would have bits around his mouth (usually after I had cleaned him out and it was nice and fresh). I would tell him it was naughty but he didn't listen :)) No problems found as a result!

I think it is probably only in certain piggies that it causes problems. To be honest, I first started to question whether ingesting Megazorb was a good idea a few years ago, as I had a bunny in stasis and a vet told me she found Megazorb in the droppings, that it wasn't a good litter to use etc.

As it happens, I don't think the Megazorb was anything to do with the stasis, but I was surprised to hear that Megazorb was being eaten, and concluded it must have been accidentally eaten with the hay. I would say that my piggies probably took in a fair bit more than the bunnies ever did too.

The Finacard is quite good stuff - better than EcoPetbed I'd say, as it's smaller pieces of cardboard. I don't think it would be absorbent enough by itself, but with the layer of newspaper, then a layer of Megazorb under the Finacard, it seems to be working really well. :)

Megazorb does 'stick' to wet veg so I guess they eat a certain amount of it but I use it for all of mine and have never had problems - which isn't to say it might not cause problems for others, as you rightly pointed out.
