hiya, I'm really glad ive found this forum :)

My Guinnea pig Carlito died the other day, I found him in his hutch barely moving his back legs, he had watery eyes and when i touched his back he sqealed, I rushed him to the vets asap and she just said he may have had a bit of a fight with my other guinnea she said he would be fine and gave him some pain relif, a few hours later he had passed away, Weirdly I had rescued a litter of bunnys recently and 4 of them had died of what seemed to be the same thing minus the runny eyes, I just assumed it was over breeding, so now I'm wondering if it was some kind of desiese!? I cant find any info on the internet with the same symptoms, but now I'm worried about his buddy peanut (who i think ill have to buy another roomy for as he looks a lil lonely) I'm hoping he doesnt go the same way.....

Any one have any ideas what it might have been?:(

Pinkglitterbunny, welcome to the forum :) I'm going to ask a Mod who deals with this Board to make a new thread for your post, so people will be able to answer your query and the original poster's query seperately.

I don't know, but if I was you, I'd hold fire on getting him a friend as he may have the same thing and pass is on. I would put your piggie in a run and completely disinfect the area, finishing with rinsing it with boiling water. This may prevent your piggie catching whatever it is. Do this every time you clean the cage out. Also, after you use boiling water and it's dried, use flee/mite spray. You may have to leave it a while whilst it dries, it will tell you all the info on the bottle. I would also chuck all feeding/watering equipment away and buy new. I know this may sound ott, but it's worth it to protect your piggie on the safe side. x Keep us updated! x

hi, thanks for the welcome guys x I Disinfected the the whole cage yesterday with boiled water and disinfectant, fortunately it was sunny so it dried out and i had a back up waterbottle that hes using now, I'm going to see how he gets on although it was months between eachother that the bunnys and carlito died...so maybe ill just monitor Peanut for a few months i keep bringing him in the house so hes not too lonely, feel sorry for him though :(

Peanut is the only one who licks his mineral stone too, I'm wondering if its keeping him well when he feels under the weather, Carlito never touched it...! x

Heya hon. Mineral stones aren't god for piggies! I'm not sure why, but I know they aren't good for them x

oh my! hope I'm not contrebuting to the illnesses thats taken over all my babies! It says for guinneas on it :s hmmm....i might look up mineral licks on the net now see if they are making them ill! Thanks Claire your so much help xxxxxxxx

Don't worry honey, I'm sure it's not giving them this illness! I have just heard that it is bad for them, I don't know in waht way. Maybe it makes them want more and more water? I really don't know. i'm sure someonemore knowledgable will post an answer shortly. x

right, found this on- http://www.freewebs.com/cavylover1/1stgpwhatdoibuy.htm

Treats, Mineral & Salt Licks- Sticky treats on sticks are not a healthy treat for your pig. If your guinea pig is having good quality food with plenty of hay and vegetables then they do not need mineral licks. Salt licks are of no use to pigs all it does is make they wee more. So pleased dont be conned into buying any of the above.

Hmmmm! well now I'm in two minds to take it away from him, seeing as he likes it so much, its nearly done with anyway maybe ill just wait til hes finished it and then just not get another one! lol xxxxx

I would take the salt lick away as it is not necessary and I think it can cause bladder stones? As for diseases, I'm not really sure sorry. I would just go with the advice above about disinfecting the cage. Maybe someone else will post something helpful for you.
