We spent a lot of money on our new guinea pigs, Ozzy and Trevor, but we can't afford much more toys for them! They only have a wooden carrot to chew on each. Does anyone have any ideas for some easy homemade guinea pig toys? Ozzy, the most energetic one, is always getting bored in his hutch since his brother Trevor is always sleeping. I quickly need some ideas! Thanks, x

A toilet roll stuffed with hay and maybe some veg in the middle. A paper bag (handles cut off) and stuffed with hay. A cardboard box (sellotape removed) that they can hide in and chew on. Chew toys aren't really necessary, there are cheaper ways to keep your piggies entertained. Have a read of this.

my pigs also have a "washing line" (piece of string stretching from one side of the cage to the other) which I occasionally hang their veggies from so they have to work for it.

also brown paper rolled up and twisted around with hay and forage in the middle.

Ours love a paper bag full of hay to burrow in (can you spot them both?!)

I used to buy 'toys' for my piggies but they are happiest with a paper carrier bag full of hay and bits of veg. They also love a repurposed Amazon box with holes cut in each end so that they can run through. Basically anything cardboard stuffed with hay makes them happy. 😀

Hi! I used old expandable pipes for my Guinness pigs Bruce and binoculars and they really seemed to enjoy it or you could use some tough string and hang some food on them or treats!

I have some interesting piggies! :)
One of my piglets has a giant willow ball that she will chase after if a roll it across the floor.
Whenever this particular piggy wants something, and I am busy cleaning, she will wack one of her wood toys on my foot (it feels like someone it tapping me). Clever girl! 🙈

Paper bags with hay always went down a treat with Comet, who was a bit nuts about his hay to be fair. Toilet rolls filled with hay were great too, but they need keeping an eye on (as with the paper bags) incase they pee too much and render the stuff unusable OR they get themselves caught in something (Comet tried to give me a heart attack on a few occasions).

As far as cage enrichment goes, my vote is for scatterfed food. Make them work for their dinner!

would any rose work? does the green have to be completely removed? is there anything i have to bear in mind if i try this?
Yes any rose flower will do. I just cut it off as near to the flower head as possible. If there is anything left when they have finished all the petals just remove it and make sure that when you cut the flower off there are no thorns. :):)

Boxes that can be open, with a lidder : ours seem to have fun opening old cheese boxes or their huge pellet box. Also boxes with holes that they have to shake or throw upside down to get the treats. It's not much work and they get easily obsessed with the toy !

Can we have a piccie please?

Here are an old human-treats distributor, the Big Box of Pellets, a tea-cup box and a cheese box.

And of course we learnt just by chance that they could open the Big Box of Pellets !
