Hi all

We have 4 piggies and 3 rats in our attic which of late has been getting too hot for them. We move them elsewhere on the bad days, but what with the stress of moving and our cat limiting where they can go we are thinking cooling the attic would be best going forward.

We can have the windows on vent but can’t open the attic door (though it has a pretty big gap under it, so it’s far from airtight!), any suggestions as to cooling the room? I’m thinking an air cooler (where you fill it with water/ice and it blows cold air out) but wondered if anyone had a better idea?

We obviously do the cold towels/ice bottles etc... but we are out for 10 hours a day so they don’t really cut it.

Thanks all!

@Spikie A portable air con unit for them would be fantastic if you can get one of those for them.

My pigs are usually in the warmest room of the house (so they're more comfortable in winter). So it can get a bit warm in there for them. I find that keeping the windows closed during the day and blocking out the sun (I have blackout curtains) really helps. It's currently 22 degrees c in their room and the thermometer on the window sill behind the curtains reads 26. So it does make a big difference.

Then when it cools down I open the curtains and windows during the night to get the air circulating and it cooled down.

I kinda live back to front when it's hot. Curtains closed during the day and open at night.

I can agree with a portable aircon. Since you already have a vent, it's easier to attach the aircon's hose/vent (I don't really know the term where the hot air goes out sorry ). It has done well for my piggies (and us slaves too) especially during this time of the year.

Have you considered marble slabs or granite slabs?
Those are cool to the touch and will remind cool in hot temperature.

We keep the blinds closed but the temperature is still too high (though still a good 3/4 degrees cooler than outside).

I think you've misunderstood what i mean about having the window on vent, that just means the window is slightly open but still shut, so it can't be opened from outside (but it is still then much much easier to break into, so we can't go out while it is like this.).

Aircon would be great, but without access to the outdoors it would be difficult to get real results.

I think all we can do is get a room cooler, which will at least help...

We do use items that stay cold, so hopefully the pigs/rats are cooler than the room.
