Hi all,

Further to a post a few weeks ago, one of our boy (Marshmallow) has kidney failure.

We are giving him extra feeds and twice weekly subcutaneous fluid injections (not a skill I even anticipated learning!) which is so far going well, slowing down his weight loss and, hopefully, the deterioration of his kidneys.

I have seen a few posts on here and on Guinea Lynx where renal failure pigs have been prescribed Benazipril (Fortekor and Lotensin are brand names). This is an ACE inhibitor so usually used for high blood pressure / heart disease, but I discussed with our vet and she confirmed that - in cats and dogs - it can also be helpful for some types of kidney failure. However, any use in Guinea Pigs is off label so she wanted to look into it further.

She has gone away to do some research on her side, but in the meantime is there anyone on the forum who has been prescribed Benazipril for their pig? I was thinking if we could find a vet that has experience using this medication in Guinea Pigs maybe he/she could discuss with my vet?

Thank you

Hi!

Sorry, I only have experience with fortekor in connection with potential heart problems.
