On of my boars has a lump. He's had it for quite a long time now, going on nearly a year. It's not sore, or discoloured in anyway, and it doesn't cause him any discomfort. When I first noticed it and took him to the vet's, they advised me to leave it as he'd have to go through the stress of an operation. I've taken him back quite a few times just to have it re-checked and had the same each time. Trouble is it's grown over time, and is now quite big.

I went to a different vet's recently (to gain a different opinion) and he gave me some completely different advice. He said they could do a biopsy on the lump, to find out if it's benign or malignant. If I was to find out the lump was cancer, the operation to remove it would be very, very high risk and leave a massive hole :'(. He's over four now, and overweight. I can't work out why he is as he eats the same as the others, and they're all perfect! I've tried diets and he always get lot's of exercise but he's always been a monster! Anyway, I'm a bit stuck on what to do, do I find out what it is and maybe risk losing him? Or carry on and hope it's nothing? It might just be me but I'm sure it's getting bigger. What would you all do?

i really don't know :-\ if it was me i'd probably want to know if it was cancer or not, but then again the operation sounds quite big and he might find it too much :-\ i'm not experienced with this although, my 0:) piggie, Ginger had lots of cancerous tumors when he got old and had to be pts :'( the vet could tell without a biopsy though, maybe it's just better to leave him? :-\
really don't know, sorry that's not much help! ::) (((huge huggles and piggie kisses to you and him))) :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
thinking of you and hope that you will be guided to the right decision :smitten:

:) Thank you

Don't worry, it's a bit of a touch decision so any thoughts are great :smitten: Sorry to hear Ginger had to be pts :'( 0:) 0:)

Where is the lump?.Can you put your fingers round it and palpate or does it seem to be attached?.

i think i would like to know what the lump is. surely a biopsy wouldn't be too much for your baby to go through. it really does depend where the lump is and whether it is intertfering with him in his every day life. if you are unsure talk to the vet and weigh up the pros and cons. does the vet think he will survive the biopsy? may god guide you to make the right decision for you and your boy. sending you hugs and cuddles :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: and the girls send :-* :-* :-*

this really is tough :-\ half of me says go for the biopsy, the other half says leav him alone :-\
maybe you should talk to the vet about it O0 thanks, well gingers lumps all appeared at once and it wouldn't have been fair to keep him going :'( :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Thanks everyone :)

maryh, it's right by his bum, I can kind of get my fingers underneath it a little bit, doesn't seem to be "attached" in any way. It's not the biopsy the vet was worried about choloe, it was the operation he would need if I found out it was cancer-he would be very high risk apparently. He's due to have a bath today so i'll give him a good clean and take a photo-that might explain more. :)

oh i see i thought it was the biopsy too ;) 98) well maybe you should have the biopsy and go from there O0 i think i'd want to know O0

as cavy love said i thought you meant the biopsy, 98) 98) 98) why not have the biopsy first and get the results and then decide where to go from there. at least you will have more information to make a better decision. sending hugs and cuddles :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: girls send :-* :-* :-*

This sounds like a sebaceous cyst, and the rump is a common area for them. They are not malignant and best left alone. Is it round and fairly hard?.A pic would help.

Oh that's good, sorry I was meant to do it yesterday but time got away from me. Yes it's perfectly round and quite hard. Like I said he's due a bath and a good tidy-up so i'll do that tonight and get the best picture I can. Thanks everyone :) :)

I'd not put him on a diet love, a chubby piggie isn't going to get sick :) :) :) If he's got a bit of a love handle it wont matter :smitten: Some piggies are just more naturally bigger than others O0
mmmmm i agree sounds just like the lump our little guy has that's been on the side of his neck for more than 2-3 years O0 and they're not harmful in anyway :)

thats really good news :smitten: :smitten: ((hugs)) :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Oh cool thanks Glynis, if one of your little one's has had one for a while that makes me feel better! Oh I gave up with the diet stuff a long time ago! The vet suggested it once but, he's just a big Fatty Pig which does make him ever so cuddly :smitten: he's just so lazy! He'll run around for hmmm about five mins and then flake out ::)

That sounds good, it's a bit worrying as it's quite big but, if it's not causing him any harm so thats cool. :) Like I said will post a pic just to make sure when he's all clean and fluffy again ;D

Sorry everyone, my bloomin' internet was playing up last night, if people don't mind holding on until tonight I can get a pic on hear. He's all clean now and internet working again. Thanks, :)

Finally, here's the picture of his lump,

What do people think now? :-\

sorry i have no idea, just to the side of the lump looks like a bit of mite/lice problem theres that brown shadow to the left of screen. he has a nice fluffy coat, am hoping someone can help you with this lump sending you both hugs and cuddles :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: girls send :-* :-* :-* and your NOT a pain! the only dumb question is the one that is never asked. sorry i couldn't help you but they are a crazy bunch here 98) 98) 98) but very helpful, kind and supportive. someone will be along that can help you. :smitten: :-* :-*

Thanks choloe :smitten:

Which bit do you think looks like mites? Don't think he's got them, where his fur is SO thick because he's a rex, and a faily long haired one at that, I have to brush him a lot. He's always got loads of bit's stuck in his fur! I once found a piece of hay, about two inches long completely hidden in there ::) This is half way through his cleaning regime ;D

the side closest to the texta marker, there is just some brown markings that look like dirt or skin problem. sorry if i have worried you, just looked like something to me. hoping some one comes along soon to help you. hugs to you and your fur baby. hoping all goes well. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: again sorry if i frighten you. girls send :-* :-* good luck with him. love that hair. :smitten: :smitten: my Oh is thinning up top wonder if a rex toupe would help?   just kidding! :smitten:

Ah I see what you mean, no don't worry you haven't worried me :smitten: Again because he's a rex his gerase gland get's very, very dirty, it's so hard to keep him clean! I have this solution the vet gave mne to clean him with, and this is before i've had a go so thats probably the brown stuff you're seeing. Hehe yes a rex toupe might help, it'd be very soft at least :smitten: :smitten:
