I have just got two baby male pigs Charlie and Freddie, that are now 7 weeks old and so far they have settled in great and getting more confidence each day. Just a bit of advice really in their cage and their indoor run their both seem to be gaining confidence and running about having fun and also they both calm when sitting on my lap. Freddie is okay when being picked up but Charlie hates it but I understand it is early days and I am still a stranger to them.
The only problem I feel I am getting no where is when i go near their cage or indoor run they just run and hide so I can't get so they will come to approach me or at least not run away if I am close to them. I have tried with bits of food and talking to them but so far this hasn't worked.
Has any one got any advice on how I can get them to trust me more when I am approaching them in their environment, as their are okay once i have picked them up but before that their just run and hide?

Some guinea pigs are more trusting than others. I've had mine a year and they will still run and hide. Its nothing to worry about. I'm just jealous of other people who's pigs don't run :red. It's all just a waiting game really, they will get more confident, it just takes time.

Hi Jacs - I've had the same kind of thing with my two girls, so don't worry.

Maisy who I've had since last October, still has a little run when I go to pick her up, and then sometimes she just stands still in a frozen mode with feet apart and one in front of each other, quite comical really. ;)

As for Dotty (8 months), she does scramble rather a lot, but I eventually catch hold of her in the end. Even when they are both sitting quietly in their box, I often go up to stroke them gently and get lots of noises, bit of movement, but I just keep my hand steady and stroke them ever so lightly and talk to them at the same time.

I think in time yours will just calm down and may not run off so much. Though, I think it all depends on the individual pig in that, some always will and others are quite happy to stay still.

Good luck. :)
