Hello friends,
My female piggie, Zinnia is standing higher in her back legs and I looked underneath to investigate. Her anus has protruded out but she is still pooping fine, eating, and active. But that area is dirty as well as the area near it and underneath. I cleaned everything with warm water and towel dried. It smelled not good. She is 8 years old. It’s like a ball almost with her anus on top. Please advise. Also it’s New Years so I can’t take her to the vet till tomorrow.

This sounds like it could be a prolapse and is very serious.
As Claire has already said please call your regular vet. They should have an answer machine with a number for an emergency out of hours service.
She really does need to be seen today.

:agr:
I know finding vets in the US is harder, but this cannot wait until tomorrow.

Please ensure you switch from the routine weekly weight checks and instead weigh her daily (at the same time each day). As hay is the main food source and it cannot be judged by eye, weight checks are the only way to be sure she really is eating enough hay. If her weight is dropping, then you will need to step in and syringe feed her

Emergency, Crisis and Bridging Care until a Vet Appointment

Hi and welcome

HUGS

I am so, so sorry for the bad timing. Things like these have a bad tendency to happen at the worst of times.

Unfortunately, a prolapse is something that cannot wait because the tissue will swell up and be impossible to push back in. Please see a vet as quickly as you can, if necessary for euthanasia to spare her a slower, unpleasant death. :(

8 years is a great age for a piggy to live to but all sorts of things can go wrong very quickly right out of the blue when they are getting frail and elderly, as I know from my own experiences. :(

:agr: This is an emergency and needs to be seen by a vet same day. Please let us know how you get on with the emergency vets.

Thank you, the support and advice from you guys means so much. Her buddy, Zinnabonzo (son chose that name) survived a stroke which parlayed her back left leg. We were going to take her for euthanasia but she recovered except for the leg and even popcorns. She is also 8. Now Zinnia has this issue. I just wonder if it’s time to let them go rather than prolonging their life for my “selfish” love. What if one dies? They have been together for over 8 years.

Also the vet hospitals open for emergency are not taking any patients unless you were their previous clients — there are only two in the area. Her vet will not be in till tomorrow morning— I’ve googled and called everywhere

Well done for trying to do the best thing for her. All I can do is wish you luck until you can see your vet. Thy have lived to a great age and had each other as companions. Whatever happens they've had a happy life so far x

Hi!

You are always in in right your to ask your vet for their own honest opinion but ultimately, any decision has to be made by you as the owner. It is never easy when the decision is not taken out of your hand. I have just lost an eight years old in November and have a nearly 8 years old very closely but also very frail sister pair where I am never sure whether they will be there when I come down in the morning; so I fully understand your dilemma. Quality of life is a big consideration and you are obviously a loving owner. :(

You may find the guides in this link here helpful as explore this whole area in more detail with all that plays into it so you can make any decisions with a clearer mind if not a less aching heart; they will hopefully help you through this most painful of times: Death, Dying, Terminal Illness; Human Grieving and Bereaved Companions: Information and Support for Owners and Their Children

Try warm sugar water as a temporary solution!
Please NEVER do this.
Sugar water is offers no advantage to your guinea pig, and is simply inappropriate.

@Cinnamon_Nutmeg as a new member to this Forum we are happy to have you here, but please do not offer health advice on threads which deal with serious medical issues.

I completely misunderstood this and couldn't work out how soaking a protruding anus in sugar water would have any effect at all! Sorry

Bizarrely it is suggested as an option in some situations as the sugar absorbs water which allows the prolapse to shrink and pop back up. It’s in actual human medical journals! A friend successfully used it for a penile prolapse in her African land snail. It was that or pts so last chance saloon.

Yes, I’d heard about this technique and there are various papers online that refer to it. However, I would contact and be guided by a vet.

Sugar in the reduction of incarcerated prolapsed bowel. Report of two cases - PubMed

Yes, it's been in use for a long time as a first aid treatment for prolapses - I've used it successfully on more than one lambing ewe, many years ago!

So maybe I didn't misunderstand after all...

@Grace I hope your prolapsed old girl and her wobbly old friend are doing OK. Perhaps you could update us next time you are online if it isn't too upsetting for you. Our thoughts are with Zinnia and Zinnabonzo 💕
