Hi, I am new to this group. I live in Suffolk in the UK. I have a 7 month old guinea pig who is quite poorly at the moment. She isn't pooing properly and eating very small amounts. I took her to the vet on Monday and they gave her a good check up. They prescribed Emeprid to help get her gut going and Metacam pain killer. They said the next step would be Antibiotics and xrays in case she has bladder stones. She wees normally when she has plenty to drink. I am syringe feeding her with Oxbow Critical care and fresh water every few hours. I rang the vet back today to ask for some antibiotics just to clear up any possible infection. They refused unless I took her back for another check. Nothing has changed since Monday apart from she has lost more weight. They wanted to charge another £60 for another consultation fee even though this would be a follow up which aren't usually charged. Anyway. Is there another way I can get some antibiotics for her or a natural alternative that anyone can suggest. I will take her back if I have to but want to try alternatives if possible. Sorry for the long post and rant. Any advise gratefully received. Many thanks

Sorry your piggy is poorly... shame they want to charge you again even tho it was only 2 days ago that they saw you but i bet that is standard practice :( You could ask them about the charge before you go and I hope you get sorted.

Hi, I did ask why there was a charge for a follow up appointment. They said it is practice but there is a £2 reduction. I am currently looking for alternatives first.

Sadly there are no alternatives to antibiotics and they can’t be obtained without a vet’s prescription

I’m sorry your vet won’t prescribe the antibiotics without charging you for a follow up even though it was only two days ago since you saw them 😞

Hi, I am sorry to hear your piggy has been unwell. I hope she has now recovered.

At a vet appointment I had today my vet told be that there has recently been a change in law regarding the prescribing of antibiotics and it is now a legal requirement for pets to be seen whenever antibiotics are prescribed, including if it is a continuation of treatment or if the pet has been seen very recently. It is a shame your vet couldn't be more flexible about the consultation fee tho.
The reason is most likely to help prevent unnecessary/incorrect use of antibiotics so as to help protect against resistance.
